It's officially fall now.... The mast has been growing, grasses are seeding out, plants are turning.... But yesterday while on a ride through some roadless country, a bull heard our horse hooves clicking on the trail and bugles at us three times in the middle of the day. It's starting to feel like hunting season.
"For some unfortunates, poisoned by city sidewalks ... the horn of the hunter never winds at all" Robert Ruark, The Horn of the Hunter

Now you have done it. Every archery elk hunter will be out there thinking they have won the biggest, baddest, bull elk bugling contest.
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles

I heard a few bugles here at work Tuesday while driving out to one of the test facilities...never got a glimpse of him though.

Miss hearing those first ones on a late summer night with the windows open...

Some days it takes most of the day for me to do practically nothing...

Now I am going to need to find a call that sounds like horse hooves on the road.
There are no bad days hunting elk, some are just better.

Now I am going to need to find a call that sounds like horse hooves on the road. I have one I will sell you. It weighs about 1100 pounds, eats hay and oats, & requires shoes every six weeks. bargain basement priced at $1500.

Haven't been up in the mountains in a while now, or to the range, either.
Fixing half of that tomorrow with a range trip, starting to get ready for antelope season and see how a co-worker shoots. I've never hunted with him before but he and his dad will be coming along on our elk hunt.
Don't want to hurry things but sure am looking forward to the opening day of 3rd Rifle!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
