How about a FN SCAR 17s in FDE? .308 ammo is "relatively" cheap and for places where you can use night vision or lights for pig hunting there's plenty of rail space.

You guys just don't get it. There is absolutely no need for a dedicated pig gun.

You need at least half a dozen dedicated pig guns, each specialized to deliver optimal performance under widely varying circumstances such as range to target, elevation, wind speed, barometric pressure, moon phase, dew point, fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field, focus group results, public opinion polls, status of your relationship with your significant other and degree of effectiveness of your latest hangover cure. When are you guys going to learn?

Rumor has it Barbarian Dan uses this as his dedicated pig gun. And at times feels over gunned.

Used a Ruger 7-08 and 120 NBT on this hog couple years ago while deer hunting. One shot and he did his last dance on his side.

Dan you hit it on the head so to speak. My deer/pig rifle is a 22 as well. My 22 shoots a 75 grain 22 traveling at 2600FPS.

It just depends on where on the property one happens to be.

On that property I've shot pigs from "Dang, he looked bigger in the scope!" to "Ain't no way we're getting her in the truck," using anything from a .243 to a .444 Marlin (the old "T" with 24 inch barrel and Monte Carlo stock). The two rifles I carry most are a 1962 Model 94 with Williams FP and "Fire Sight" (.30-30) for use in dense cover and a Savage 16 in .260 Remington for just about everywhere else.

If you were going to have a dedicated feral hog rifle for that sort of varied terrain - only one - and it wasn't going to be used for anything else, what model and caliber would you choose?

There's no one clear choice here. But for shooting 250 lb hogs (as big as I've personally seen) out to 300 yards or so, the .30-06 would be as good as any. And it'll work on smaller ones at closer range, too smile

Only a fool would sell an accurate .30-06

Yeah spot-on Mike!

The blued version obviously with a painted stock. A lovely accurate and very cheap rifle. No [bleep] it has accounted for well over 200 hogs in the last 2.5 years.

Yep that's some common sense. Loaded with 150 to 180g bullets (I would lean towards the heavy ones) there'd be no other cartridge that would put the 30-06 in the shade for that sort of work.
Certainly the 270 Win as a lighter variant or something like the 338 Federal or 338-06 at the other end might be as good or in some ways better, but the 30-06 is as good as any.

And Arns9 250lb is a big pig in my area too and they are BIG even at that size. The 30-06 has power to burn though.

they tend to come around in bunches and I am often more worried about putting lead into as many as possible than anything else and for that I rely on my SKS. If a singular kill shot comes around I like my 260 with 140 grain Sierra through the heart better than any of my other rigs. Got a new Vx3 on it and am dying to ring it out.

I can't tell from the picture: Warne mediums with Redfield, or something else?

As much as I like my 7-08 with 154 Hornady RN's, Steely hit the mark in the 1st response, 20" 308 winchester. You do not reload and 308 ammo has a good variety and can be found just about anywhere. Do like the 358 win choice also.

Shot them with a 22 lr, the Horn., 222 Mag. They all die pretty quick.

But the 400 Whelen/300 TSX and X consistently blows corks in even the fattiest of bacon and makes them leak like no other....
