Yes, a walnut-stocked .300 Winchester Magnum. It's a very nicely made rifle that functions great and shoots very well. Weight is right around 8 pounds with a 15-ounce scope.

What kind of groups were you able to get with it, Mule Deer?

I was shooting 5-shot groups with factory ammo only, for a review in a magazine that requires exactly that. The overall average for a BUNCH of groups was 1.35 inches.

This won't sound like much to those who always shoot 3-shot groups, but 3-shot groups will average about .6 times as large as 5-shot groups. Meaning this rifle would have averaged around .8 inch for 3-shot groups with a variety of factory ammo--and would easily beat that with handloads worked up for this specific rifle.

That's also right out of the box, with no modification to the bedding--or adjusting the trigger, because it didn't need any adjusting. Haven't measured it yet, but it's very crisp and would guess the pull at 2 to 2-1/2 pounds.

That is pretty impressive performance for an off the shelf new rifle.

efw,

Apparently real-world pricing is following the MSRP pretty closely so far, $1799 for the walnut-stocked model and $1499 for the synthetic.

Been eyeing these in 8x57, but waiting for a good general review review. I like the walnut, but think the synthetic would be better for western washington.

Do you have an opinion on Mauser synthetic stock?

Yes, my question as well, Mule Deer. What do you think of the synthetic stock, if you have handled one?

Paulh and bigwhoop,

Yes, I've handled the syn-stock version and it would work just fine.

As a matter of fact, the other rifle I tested at the same time was one of the new Sauer 101's with a synthetic stock. The 101 and Mauser 12 are VERY closely related, in fact they use the same detachable magazine, and I strongly suspect their synthetic stocks comes from the same source. The 101 I tested is a .270 Winchester and it outshot the Mauser 12, averaging 1.21 inches for a bunch of 5-shot groups with three kinds of factory ammo. In fact I am probably going to inquire about the price for a used test rifle.

The biggest difference between the two rifles is the safety. The Mauser's is very similar to the Model 70 Winchester's, while the Sauer's is a tang safety with an additional small button on top that must be pushed in before the safety will move.

I got one of these last month, in an 8x57, with synthetic stock. Am liking it very much.

Your making it hard not to buy one. Might you be selling the test rifle?

What's the trigger mechanism comparable to? Simple or complex? They just barely give you a peek at it in the video. I like that someone, especially out of Europe, has come out with a classic looking rifle these days. I about sick of the bizarre lines of rifles and shotguns these days.

John: what's your opinion of the way the barrel is attached to the action? Some folks seem to find that a problem.

"An archer sees how far he can be from a target and still hit it, a bowhunter sees how close he can get before he shoots." It is certainly easy to use that same line of thinking with firearms. -- Unknown

pabucktail,

It's a typical modern enclosed trigger, with a couple of screws for adjustment, and since the safety is on the rear of the bolt it doesn't affect pull.
