That seems like a very, very, very late 32-40 to me. Could be though.
The letter would be interesting.

I get the magazine, and have read the article. Looked like a pretty neat 99.

A friend gave me the article to read. Sounds like someone got a wild hair and did a few things to a 99.

I just bought 1899 C 38-55 #187918 (1917). From the records on these calibers I have been keeping I think there was a parts clean up about that time. There seems to have been a spike in production of the three Winchester calibers. This would have been about the time the USA entered WW1. The barrel lettering on this 38-55 C is
187918 1899 C 38-55 24 barrel (cut from 26 inches) 1917 Matching numbers on forearm, buttstock and buttplate
Barrel style #2 (usually 38,000 115,000 ????)(??? Late parts gun??) (Bore 9/10) FS: Marble #5 RS: Chas. Daniels PAT JULY 25, 05 TS: None BillR
