Anyone do it?
I plan on taking a vacation to either Hawaii or the Keys next yr. Would either of those places be good for spearfishing (without scuba gear)? For someone that's never done it before, would it be feasible to book a charter or guide to take me out? Or would that be a waste of cash?

Yes Hawaii has amazing spear fishing to be had in Kaneohe Bay that does not require any scuba gear. As well as off of Kailua Beach. As for a guide I would think it would be of great value to you. I don't know of any to recommend to you. When I lived there we just rented the MWR Boston Whalers and went at it.

It's a lot more than just jumping in and spearing a fish. I lived in Hawaii about 5 years & did a lot of spearfishing. I have been featured on Hawaii Skin DiveR TV & the magazine. If you're interested Go to Maui and check out http://spearfishmaui.comJeremy will provide everything to include beginner free diving lessons.

I've always wanted to try spear gun fishing while diving. But all my dives are task related, so until I get a chance to do some recreation diving spear gun fishing will have to stay on my list of to dos.

I speared fished several time in the Straits of Juan de Fuca out near Neah Bay. We were on SCUBA and used air assisted guns and less commonly a Hawaiian sling. We always got fish but enjoyed the scallops even more. I did get wrapped up in braided fishing line, went through some air before cutting out. One violates pretty much all of the SCUBA rules while hunting in the kelp. Sneaking through the kelp reminds me of hunting dense forest.

JWP58, There is a lot more to spearfishing than just jumping in with a gun. I lived, fished and spearfished in the Keys for about 14 years. To be successful one needs to learn species identification, behavior, and size and quantity limits. You can freedive (spearfishing on scuba is legal in Fl.) but you need to be a pretty good freediver.

Bring a bag of bait or bust some crabs open and you'll have fish everwhere
