Friends,

I took some time off and spent a good bit of time in my favorite stomping grounds. Bob (RJM) came to visit, and we headed for my little shack out in the sagebrush.

We had our N Frame Smiths and no shortage of ammo between the two of us.

We headed over Double Springs Pass on to the Pahsimeroi, then down to HorseHeaven Pass. At HorseHeaven Pass we stopped and decided we would launch some lead at a couple rocks on a distant hill.

Here is Bob at HorseHeaven Pass, shooting his 4" 41 Mag.

This is the valley that Elmer often wrote about in reference to hunting jackrabbits with his handguns, as well as rifle hunting antelope. We did not see any jacks during the daytime on the Pahsimeroi, but the upper Pahsimeroi was loaded with antelope, which is pretty much always the case.

Word to the Wise:

You don't want Bob shooting at you, anywhere under 500 yards or so. wink

I've never met either of you in person, but consider both of you friends. I'm exceedingly glad y'all got to share some time together doing what you love. I just hope there are some big rocks left out there after you two got done "graveling" them. heheh Thank you for sharing.

I still remember back in the seventies when Mom and Dad got their red Coleman cooler like that one. They've still got it and it still looks new.

MacKay, Great to hear from you again.. BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. Couple summers ago, my wife, our dogs and I came in to the valley from the Salmon side.. Drove around a bit and looked over the country.. But I don't think we went far enough down the valley.. Seemed like there was quite a few little ranches to the west of the road, but to the east was sage brush blending into low hills.. I try to get to the Salmon area every year.. Elmer was
an awesome guy.. While I did not always agree with all he said,
he was the greatest.. Glad you had a good trip.. Nothing like a bit of shooting the make a guy feel right with the world..

Took my boys on a camping trip back in July with a 6 1/2" blackhawk and 2" taurus 605 and about 500rds of 38 sp ammo. They enjoyed plinking at various targets near and far. Amazing what can be done with a sixgun.

Sounds like fun Ted, too bad there weren't any jacks! I bought a used 4" 41 maggie in 1967 for $100, shot the bejeebers out of it using a cast Lyman 410026 & a Lyman 410032 bullet, the #026 was hollow pointed. The Texas heat was a real problem so I would get up in the loft of a farmer friends barn, swing the big doors open & shoot out into his fields. Busted a lot of dirt clods from that loft. Armadillos, turtles, snakes, bullfrogs & rabbits hated that gun. Nothing like the pop you get when whacking a big snapping turtle with a cast slug!

Thanks for all the positive comments Friends.

We had a great time.

I took RJM to the old cabin tucked away where I had taken the pics of 4" Redhawk. We took pics of our guns and launched a few dozen rounds at a rock on a distant hill at that spot as well.

Here is a pic of my 29-2 44 mag at the old cabin:

Some will recognize the scenery from the old thread.

On a long distance shooting note. I really like the fiber optic front sight for close range shooting, say out to 75 yards or so, but for holdovers, a ramped front sight makes things a bit easier.

I also had my 6.5" 29-2 along with a red ramp front sight and it was a bit better for longer range holdovers.

You can just barely see RJMs revolver, but his 4" 41 is on the other side of me by my knee.

We were shooting at a rock about the size of 3 one gallon milk jugs, sitting side by side. At first we guessed long on the range, due to lack of vegetation or objects to compare (and my piss poor range estimation).

After a bit of shooting, and getting zeroed in on the rock, we figured it out to be only about 375 yards away.

Friends,

Continuing on about the mini expedition, RJM and I took stroll one afternoon down to Mackay reservoir. Most of the water is gone and the upper section is about ideal for doing some long range practice.

[Linked Image]

We paced off the distances to a few spots then set up a couple of chunks of wood, a cantelope sized rock and a 5 gallon bucket someone had sunk in the reservoir. We ended up taking the bucket with us when we left, so as not to leave any trash, even on the bottom of a reservoir.

The 5 gallon bucket was the farthest target as I recall, at 550 yards.

We found a nice shady spot. Bob had all his ammo in a nice ammo can. I had the "ultra classy" Folgers coffee can full of 240 grain SWCs.

You can fit 500 rounds in the tall Folgers cans btw smile

Then of course after cooking some meat on the BBQ, it was time to ring steel from the front porch!
