I'm working up a load for some 325grn. Hornady FTX's for a Marlin .45-70 using Hornady brass. I'm loading them on top of 58grn. IMR-3031, using RCBS dies. The load is compressed, to the point it's mashing out and deforming the plastic "tips". I am using a 6" drop tube and "thumping" cases to get the powder to settle. Any thoughts (other than to load less 3031)?

You can get a seating stem for your Hornady Dies for seating the FTX, or use one out of another set of dies.

hornady 45-70 cases are short compared to others. Try another manufacturer.

RCBS seating stems, even if you request one which will seat pointier bullets, will not do the trick. Hornady dies will accommodate pointed bullets however. I have used them successfully to seat even the soft semi-spitzer 400 Originals from Barnes. Overall however, I think RcBS makes the best neck expander die, so it worth keeping that set as well.

Use a compression die to compress the powder . . . I do not know how 3031 will react to compression, though. Were I you, I would do what you consider unthinkable and reduce the powder load . . .

The Hornady manual doesn't list 3031 powder for that bullet. What load data you using? I have no problem seating those bullets with my RCBS 3 die set. I have to set the loaded round ON TOP of the shell holder to crimp but it works fine. I'm loading 47 grains of IMR-4198 in WIN cases and getting 1950 fps over my chrono. That's fast enough for me. Try a faster powder.
