Has anyone hunted this unit? I am going on a trip with a friend and his uncle for the second rifle season. We had originally planned a hunt further north with his cousin who knows that area pretty well, but something came up and his cousin is unable to go. We are trying to salvage our trip and we picked this area since my friend's uncle is a little familiar with the area but we need HELP! I welcome any suggestions on areas to hunt, camp, and to stay away from. What about the terrain and vegetation. I am looking at topo maps and in some areas there are a lot of contour lines. Does anyone know anything about that area southeast of Highway 133 along Log Cabin Ditch Road?

With a group of 3 other hunters,I did a cabin/drop camp combo hunt in 53 year before last. The areas we hunted went from fairly tame to very rugged. The drop camp area was a fairly easy area to hunt. Most other areas we hunted had lots of slick, fern-covered aspen falls and steep inclines. The drop camp we hunted was near Haystack Mountain and Peterson Creek area and did not see much action. On our return trip, our outfitter dropped us off and we hunted down a steep mountain about a quarter of mile or so apart. We did see a few elk but most were out of reach i.e. across the deep part of Robinson Creek on a mountainside over a quarter of mile away. The hunt was challenging but, worth every moment. This year my hunting buddy and I are doing a 5-day (2nd rifle season) drop camp hunt in the same general area. Sorry, but I don't know much about the area around Hiway 133 around the log Cabin Ditch Road. There were no roads in the areas we hunted....just wilderness. We only saw 3 hunters the entire time we were there.

I highly recommend GoogleEarthing it thoroughly. I always do, even for familiar areas and after returning from a hunt. Always helped me understand the lay of the land and good routes in and out.
