Yellow Front, Smitty's, Gambles, Rasco, Sprouse-Reitz, AJ Bayless, Revco, or Woolworth's?

Same here.

Maybe they were more a regional thing because I don't recall ever hearing the names of the others.

last two yes. others no. round these parts, it was GC Murphy. when the kmarts came to town in the mid 60's, GCM created Murphy Mart and went head-to-head for years. Sears was the high dollar place and the other two were for the rest of us. i worked at a murphy mart in high school.

How about M.E< Moses or Skillerns? Heck for that matter the next soon to be forgotten- Montgomery Wards. Or as Dad used to call them, Monkey Wards. They were my first credit card but even that 12% rate couldn't save 'em.!

Yep, had at least two S&L's shut down locally.

An interesting thing happened at an old friends business a while after the S&L situation had pretty much played out. A part of his business was buying quantities of used ATM's, refurbish and then resell them. One day an employee of his was starting to refurb another of a group of ATM machines that had been sitting in various warehouses for months on end when he discovered a money bag inside the ATM containing many thousands of dollars.

It took a lot of tracking down over a period of time but eventually they were able to locate the appropriate bank to which the money belonged. As it turned out that group of used ATM's came from one of the defunct S&L's. No one anywhere knew anything about the recovered money or that it even existed because whatever shortages turned up were just written off as part of the S&L loss.

The young employee who found the money received a pretty decent reward for his honesty in turning the lost money in.

From the list, just Gambles, Revco, and Woolworth's. I would add Gibson's.

I remember Sprouse-Reitz and Woolworth's but the rest are probably east of the Mississippi Sierra's stores.

In Ca there was White Front stores but no Yellow Front.
