Generally takes me an hour or so to fall asleep. Then I awake every 60-90 mins or so until I am fully awake, early, generally 5 or so. If I get 4 hrs in I am pleased but I seem to get what I need. Weekends I will run to 7 Am or so. My mind screams work a fair bit...

I can't sleep in my chair or on the couch. I hit the rack and I'm asleep in minutes but up in 4 hours to piss. then the trouble starts, my mind just goes into the figuring mood. Thinking about shiit that ain't worth it.......or the upcoming day, wife, kids, things that DO matter. I'll generally lay there for an hour or so before drifting off again into a horribly broken sleep. Then, up around 5:30-6:00am.

Just get a decent bed.

We just got a new one, been sleepin on the old one for over 20 years.

They make some pretty awesome beds these days, the pillows are pretty crazy too. I can't sleep on one of those pillows that's fulla fluff and air. I'd do better using a sand bag for a pillow than one of those weightless fluff bags. The new pillows we got could be registered as weapons, you could kill a person in a pillow fight with these things. I love em.

Something clever here.

Bristoe,
I've have what one of my doctors finally told me is something called "onset insomnia" and I've had for as far back as I can remember. I could never go to sleep on Sunday night because I dreaded getting up early to go to work the next morning. Here's what works for me:
1) No alcohol or caffeine in the evening hours.
2) Don't eat anything for at least 3 hours before bedtime. This will also help if you have acid reflux or problems with indigestion.
3) Turn your clocks around so you can't see what time it is after you set the alarm and don't check the time if you have to get up to pee.
4) Get a prescription for Xanax or one of the generics for anxiety. I take Alprazolam occasionally ONLY AS NEEDED. I only take 1/2 of a .5mg tablet. A prescription for 30 .5mg tablets lasts me for a year or longer. Xanax is addictive but only if you take it all the time.
5) If you're not sleepy when bedtime roles around figure out boring to do to help clear your mind and relax. A few games of Solitaire on my computer usually works for me.
6) When I exercise (run/walk or lift weights) just before going to bed it relaxes me but it may have the opposite effect on you.
7) I forgot that you need a comfortable bed. I have a Select Comfort bed and it's the only bed I've ever had where I can sleep all night and not wake up with a backache.

Good luck,
Victor

Well,...that's a bit extreme.

I'm not depressed,..I'm grumpy and bored. Depression is some serious chit.

My peter still works as much as I want it to,..probably even more,..but I've reached the age where I have better things to do than cater to its every whim. (thank goodness!)

Basically,..there's nothing wrong with me that a 6 month leave from work of and a couple of celebrex won't fix.

At the root level, I'm pretty happy about that. But I don't handle boredom very well,...so I grump.

Also,...I piled up in the bed and slept like a dead man for 7 hours last night,..so I'm in a much better humor today.

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, when the evil days come not.

Nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them; while the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain;

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves,

And the grinders cease, because they are few; and those that look out the windows be darkened, and the doors shall be shut in the streets.

When the sound of the grinding is low; and he shall rise up at the voice of a bird .................................

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.

Since you brought up a Biblical comment on aging which highlights our dwindling abilities and our inevitable end, the whole thread along with my infirm and aging parents and surgical patients has paralleled and highlighted this. I've come to the inevitable conclusion that getting old is for most a very challenging and difficult part of life shrinking our participation in our shrinking world; there is depression, anxiety, dementia and the bodily failings I was trying to put a comical spin on in the posts above.

However, and very seriously, we are coming to the end of one and to the beginning of another, our eternal existence. John 3:16 is the completed answer in the proverbial nutshell. It is my desire here that all who read this thread would be so moved to accept its more-gracious-than-we-can-realize offer.

Then we can enjoy the ride better and in fact see the folly of depending in our own strength and pride of life. As the scriptures aptly put it, "our lives here are as a vapor or wisp of smoke".

The fastest way for me to go to sleep is to attend church services. Watching TV comes in second.

My problem is everything I like to drink has caffeine in it. Plus I worked days for 30 years and now after being laid off I work a 12.5 hour night shift job.

At 75, I get 7-8 hrs. sleep nightly; however, its broken into two hour intervals due to piss calls & arthritic shoulder pain! Bottom line, old age sucks!

I've been retired for 2 months. After many years of getting up at 5, I can't switch to a later wake up time, at least not yet. I'll drink a whole pot of coffee before my wife even starts to wake up. Thank goodness for the internet.
