Not really. Used to run cows out west of town. That was a long time ago.

They have to charge extra to pay for the advertising.

But after miles and miles of bill boards extolling the Buc-ee way, they still the cleanest bathrooms I have found, even if you have to walk a quarter of a mile through stuff to get to them.

Just don't take a wife or kid there, it will be costly.

Huntsville is 30 miles South on 45.

Sam Houston home and museum, plus a great old restaurant on the main drag. Hunstville State Park just south of town on 45, nice quiet place in the Piney Woods, maybe my favorite state park. The lake there always had a couple of bass boats on it thirty years back. Might still be worth tossing a lure in. Lots of places to fish off of the bank, might even be worth putting a kayak on.

Nice campground too, if a 30 minute commute is doable I'd camp on the shore of the lake (they got sites with electricity) get up early for one of them fine breakfasts in that corner restaurant on the main drag (right across from the courthouse), and then jet up 45 to Madisonville. I was just on it last summer, two lanes each way but 80 plus weren't a problem. No one will mess with the tent all day long.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Nice area. I bought a Catahoula pup from a lady outside Madisonville years ago, pass through there often on our way to Dallas and points north.

Stay away from the Dairy Queen. They get more mileage out of their frying oil than most people get in their cars. grin

The way they are spreading down here from Luling to Port Lavaca and up to Madisonville...you'll know soon for a fact.

The larger ones are a gas station that can rival a grocery store. Exactly like some of those big truck stops as a matter of fact.

Roger,

Madisonville isn't anywhere near some of the hole in the walls you have been in I am sure. As far as stuff to do though I have some doubts. What I usually do there is buy gas and something to eat on the way to Tyler.

Back in the mid 80's, I worked out there for 6 months. Wasnt anything out there then and I havent been back, but I dont figure much has changed.

Use to be a truck stop that had a pretty good buffet, that was about it.
