Is it even a wasp? Hell if I know, kinda evil lookin' but cool at the same time. I've seen a few of them this Summer, very fast movers during hot temps. Chilly today so he stood still for pics. 1.5-2" long.

Not a real member - just an ordinary guy who appreciates being able to hang around and say something once in awhile.

it's definitely a wasp but I couldn't even guess what species. There must be 1000's of kinds of them.

That's what I was wondering, some kind of spider wasp?
BGG and I got to discussing bugs one day and he mentioned tarantula hawk. This thing looks similar.

Yup. Nonaggressive to people but Hell on spiders. I busted up a "nest" last week that had the carcasses of at least four Black Widows in it. These get a pass by me unless they try to build a nest in a piece of equipment or in a doorway. Ed

Well now spiders are humping wasps. And so it begins. I'm convinced insects will over take humans.

Some call them tarantula hawks, pretty docile unless you mess with her hole/nest in the ground.

The tarantula hawk is reported to have the second most painful bite/sting of any insect. Bullet ant is worse.
Obviously no tarantulas in MT but maybe this kind eats black widows? Who knows, thanks for all the input.

Don't think it's a Tarantula Hawk.. Had lots of those back in California, cool winged critter.. Very active, very badass.
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...
