Leaving on a fly-in moose hunt tomorrow afternoon.

Getting pretty excited.

Swapping labour (camp end of season shut down), for a 3 day opportunity at a bull. Hoping for a one & a half year old "eater", as we will be in extremely "rough", but beautiful lake country.

Paul.

At my old house I had reason to be concerned with vandalism and theft. I did keep trail cams on the place well concealed, but I also had an old junker that didn't function strapped to a tree in plain open sight. That was a decoy. People tend to behave themselves if they know there's a camera out. If there's one camera in plain view, it's likely there is at least one more hidden. They can steal the one in plain view, but all they get is a broken camera, meanwhile you get a picture of them stealing it on your concealed camera.

The decoy keeps 99% of would be thieves and vandals at their best behavior. That other 1%, that's your "stupids" that can't be fixed. But they can be prosecuted.

Thanks Dave,

Makes perfect sense, after hearing your logical thought process.

Who'd a thought:

Logical & analytic, as well as a good bloke, father, husband, friend & mentor.

Keep up the good work.

Paul,

That is my dream hunt. A moose. Doesn't have to be a monster, just a cool moose hunt.

Cheers Dave & Tom,

Will try & do the blurry picture thing & share on my return.

Last trip in to close up this camp (3 years ago), got a bull calf, after an early spring & great summer, feed wise. Needless to say, he was a big calf & I remember how much work that retrieval was !

Can not imagine the work involved with a mature Bull, in a truly rough & remote area.

Paul.

My Joey boy is 9, too young for this year's white tail youth hunt. But next year I can take him deer hunting.

I started thinking about what I should have him use for a rifle, a light kicker for a little guy. Then I remembered it's legal to hunt deer in MN with .223, well I don't have one. But I do have a 22-250 and a 220 swift.

The 22-250 weighs over 13 lbs and is very long, very bulky and the scope is too big, 6.5-20.

But, the 220 swift is new, Ruger standard M77 MKII... has a nice burris FFII 3-9 on it, perfect.

I have a year to work up a deer load for it, for now I picked up a box of the only 220 swift fact ammo I could find. Winchester 50 gr soft points.

I'll run a rod and patch down the tube to measure the twist, I'm not sure what it would be, hoping it's 1 in 8 but I suppose it's a little slower.

I'll tell him my plan tonight and show him the rifle, get him all excited about it and next time I get a chance I'll help him shoot it so he can see what center fire is all about.

for some reason I think it's a slow rate, like 1 in 14.... crap, can't remember.

Well I am not going to put a custom barrel on it, the rate will be what ever it is, I just need a decent deer bullet for it that shoots acceptable groups.

I picked up an H&R Handi youth-stocked model in .223 last fall for when my kid is old enough. He is 5 now, so it will be a while. 1/9 twist lets you shoot the medium-heavy bullets just fine. Bushnell 3-9 4200 on it.

It shoots the factory 55 grain TSX ammo into a few inches at 100, but I have yet to try the 62 grain TSX in handloads.

Let me know if you want to try it out.

Dave, if you can get your hands on some 55gr'ers I think you'd be more than fine in a NP or a ttsx

My youngest is going to hunt this year for the first time . Ive had her shooting my .223 contender carbine but I think I'll have her shoot my 243 MD 7 with some 80 gr bullets she's 16 so I think she can handle it .

Dave I have a set of RCBS 220 swift dies that I got in a trade I have no use for them . I would be more than happy to send them to you. Also a set of 300 savage dies and some brass if ANYBODY wants them pm me they're just gonna collect dust here.

Assuming he would be hunting from an elevated stand, very short range, seated and well rested rifle, you could probably use a heavier rifle and thus a heavier caliber if you have something reasonable.

How about a pistol caliber lever rifle, like a .357 or even .25-20?

I suppose you probably don't have one of those in your closet, but there's time to shop smile
