I owned a S&W 1500 in 243 a number of years ago used it once but never shot anything with it. Game intended would be deer and lope and smaller game in Africa. I would only consider beautiful wood and blued rifles. I really like the Win 70 limited from Cabelas(minus the floor plate). I know of a Ruger 77 in 257 for 650(steep).
Would do you guys think?

That Ruger is a good deal. Jump on that one just cuz

I've owned (own) plenty of both. Currently I have a limited run Shot Show Model 70 Featherweight in .257 Roberts. I prefer the Roberts just because it's not that common, is a great round for anything I'll hunt as of yet, I load my own...and well, I just like it

That price does not include rings so gotta add for that. Not that great of a deal.
1500 for the Win 70 is more than I want to spend.

I guess I'll be the lone dissenter here, but I would go with the 243 any day.

The 243 shines with good bullets, and it kicks noticeably less. If you load the 257 up to its "modern" potential with 115/120 grain bullets, it feels more like a 270 than a lightweight. At that point, why not just run a 270 and get the job done?

The 243 does exactly the same things as the 257 with about 15 grains less bullet and 7 grains less powder--something that can be felt on the shoulder. And on the light end, it can run the great 55 BTips at over 4000fps. They are flat, and flat out work on varmints, including saving fur.

im with Dakota Deer, when it comes to rifles if they make ive used it at one time or another, from small bores to big bores, the .243 will kill anything in north amercia with a good bullet and a well placed shot,if you want something to talk about take a .257 if you want something to kill stuff with take a .243, and you can buy ammo at any mom and pop store in the country. rio7

In Africa the 243 was- is very popular. Every PH had one that was in our camp. A few favored the 270 mine favored an old Sako 06 that was his fathers but all liked the 243. My PHs neighbor and good friend finished off a big Kudu bull at 425 meters with an old suppressed Sako in 243 with a South African bullet that I can't remember while I was there.

They only made 500 I was told. Scott's Outdoors in Jay Florida had 4. Me and a guy I work with bought 2 of them. They did make a lot more in the push feed version. Ours are factory CRF. Which from what I know hasn't happened since pre'64

The 243 and 257 Roberts are pretty much twins when it comes to most hunting use.

That is easy to figure out.

I could see where if you were into LR shooting the 243 would be better but other than that no difference other than the rifle.

Roberts are cool in a grandpa style rifle.

243 for a stainless, use all the time, hunting/truck gun setup.

Go for it Ben!

They are nice handling rifles.

I load 117 gr SGK's with H4350 for about 2950fps.
Very accurate load most days. Only shot one buck antelope and one whitetail doe, both died.

The 243(84 MT) uses the same keg of H4350 and 90 gr Scenars, 3100fps.
Just a coyote with it last Spring but it's going antelope hunting in a couple weeks. Probably won't see any antelope but coyotes better look out or they'll get left jabbed hard.

Yep, plan on it.

I've got a 6.5mm barrel in the closet. I'm going turn one of my rifles into a 6.5-06.

Plus my wife and I are in the process of buying our first house and its a real fixer upper.

So it'll be a while before my bank account has some fun money in it.

I've had about equal numbers of 243's and 257's (all factory, and about 6 or 7 of each)... the 243 has been significantly easier to get accurate loads for across the board.

My heart is with the Rbt's, my head is with the 243...

Yea I'm pretty psyched.

I'm not entirely sure what it to totally needs. But its looking like a well house, furnace, kitchen, bathroom, porches, exterior paint, etc.

so far my rifle looney problem with this comparison is i can't find 257 brass often, but the 243 eats barrels.

lol can anyone think of a more obscure problem??
