I'm looking for a Remington model 7 ,I would like walnut and stainless if possible ,but here's my question ,looking between 260,7mm-08 or 308, primarily to be used on whitetails with rare chance I might take a black bear with it,I've got plenty of experience with 308 but 0 with the other two and looking for anyone with first hand experience with those ,I know the 7mm-08 is here to stay but what about the 260? And real world performance ? And last but not least I don't hand load at present

I'd choose the .7-08, personally. Just because the .7mm bullet has a higher BC & Sectional Density. And you could always neck down .308 brass if you can't find .7-08 brass.

Nothing wrong with a .260, though. If you only planned to hunt Whitetails, it's a great caliber and will be flatter shooting than a .7-08 or .308. if ammo availability is a major concern, than .308 wins out above .7-08 & .308
But if you throw black bears into the equation, I'd personally opt for the bigger bore. JMHO

Hands down - 308. But I don't think that you will find walnut with S.S.. Try some 150 /165gr. Fusions, Core-Lokts, Interlocks, Ballistic Tips, Sierras ,Hot Cores etc., whatever shoots well in it and kill anything you want in the N.E..

.

I had an ode/black synthetic 7mm-08, that I took in a debt barter, for one season.

I had the black synthetic stock camo-dipped (RealTree) as soon as I got it.

It shot very well, handled even better, and made two Northern Whitetails DRT that year.

What's not to like ?

You had the 7mm-08? So then why did you get rid of it?

Good Buy at that

Have a SS 7mm-08 myself, one of these days it'll get a lighter stock to help balance it out a little better. Been a good rifle over the years though.

Maybe I'm cheap but I thought the price was ok but nothing to get excited over, which are better guns the older ones with 18 1/2" tubes or the newer ones with the 20"?,seems more like a model 700 with the longer tube

My wife and daughter both have youth 7mm-08. They just flat out kill stuff with them, including antelope and elk. The wifes is 18 1/2 and the daughters is 20". Less than 50 FPS different.

my wife tried all the youth and compact guns that we could find at that time and the Rem 7 Youth with the 18-1/2 barrel was by far her favorite.....ive recommended it to a number of people looking for a gun for their wives or kids.....

I have a couple of Remington Model 7's and really like them. Mine were older rifles that I had customized. One should have been re barreled to 7mm08, but I went with a 338 Fed and 260 Rem instead.

Any of the cartridges would work just fine for me, but the 7mm08 ammunition has been available in most sporting goods stores around here for the last year. It has been frustrating seeing all those boxes of ammo sitting there on the shelves and not having a single thing to shoot it in. I was in Bass Pro Friday. No 260 Rem, no 308 Win, no 338 Fed, but plenty of 7mm08.

You need to focus on finding a stainless Model Seven first, in any of your three listed chamberings. Then buy it. You can find a walnut stock from someone to put it in.

If you don't handload, I'd go with 308, then 7-08, finally 260.

Yeah. Kick myself in the butt for not buying those S.S.'s in every caliber when they were offered. Nice gun for the price.

You're not the only one kicking themselves. Maybe we ought to kick Remington into gear so they'll make them again.

A 260 will do what ever you want , Scenarsshooter killed a Grizly at 350 yards with a 260 . I wouldn't worry about deer hunting with black bear thrown in with a 260
