The stocks are about the best factory stocks going.

Remington stainless barrels are notoriously good.

The package is of a very nice weight and balances well.

There is not much to complain about with those rifles. I think they are probably the most bang for the buck in factory rifles today (though the Ti is neck and neck with it).

Almost bought one in 30-06 last year (even layed it away) then got cold feet because I though it was too light for an 06. Also, I was trying to get away from pencil bbl rifles as I don't like how they heat up, or feel/look. I think it would be a better choice in lighter recoiling rifles such as 7mm-08 or 260 though. If you want a light rifle you might want to check out a Tikka T3 in Lam SS or Syn SS. They are just as light as the Rem but have a 1" MOA Guarantee are not finicky and don't shave weight from the barrell to get light. All in all, I think (know) they are the best value on the market today in a light weatherproof package. I own one in LAM SS 7 1/2 pounds and it is the beez kneez. And no Tikka owner will ever tell you about them being fussy, or heating up quickly, or being inaccurate. They just plain shoot. Look at that beautiful .308 that was just advertised and sold in the 24hour classified section today. What a beauty!

I have the LSS stock on a 280 REM, 300 SAUM, and a 338 WIN MAG. I believe they are the right balance between weight, rigidity and balance (even with the larger barrel). The 280 is a #1 contour and it seems to like most ammo but it is not the tack driver like my 338. I would go with the 700 and get started working up loads. You'll find one that the 7mm-08 likes. I would replace the rock of a recoil pad remington puts on this stock with a decelerator. I personally would not hesitate to use a 7mm-08 on elk with the right bullet. I prefer the 338 but have used the 280 and 270 enough to realize that the 7mm-08 is adequate. Besides, it is the perfect deer round!

Mowser you have me throughly confused with this post. Why did you think the LSS was too light for a 30-06? You also stated that the Tikka Lam SS that you own is "just as light as the Rem....". The Rem LSS is actually about a pound lighter than your Tikka if the listed weights are correct. Anyway it seems to me you are contradicting yourself when comparing the two rifles. Just a confused country boy trying to figure this all out. Sam

Prolly a bit confused myself-spend alot of time there. But I was of the impression that the Rem in question here shaves weight with a pencil bbl. The tikka doesnt save its weight in the bbl. That was my only point-other than its also a no-brainer gun that requires zero post factory tweaking. So, what I'm saying is that I don't mind light neccesarily-i just don't like pencil bbl rifles in 30 cal. If the Rem is not a pencil bbl. then I totally stand corrected and am no longer confused.

To my way of thinking the SS Laminate 700 Mt. Rifle is the best rifle that Remington makes, and if one were inclined to things Remington this is the way he should go. I think that it's light, but not overly so (as I think the Ti is), the laminate stock is handsome and warmer than synthetics, the gun balances well, and it has a good reputation for accuracy. Also, as opposed to the Ti, it has a detachable floor plate, which is handier than a blind magazine. For your uses, it's too bad you can't get one in .308, as I know how the .308 does on elk/moose, and it ain't bad!

It certainly is a good looking rifle which what made me want one in the first place-buy I opted for a Kimber 84M classic in 7mm-08. The only Rem they had in stock was a 30-06 at the time. Then a friend counseled me not to get the Rem in 30-06 cuz it was tooth rattler. That helped me make up my mind cuz i wanted something at the time that was fun from the bench. Turned out the Kimber was awesome in the field but not a very impressive bench package. Now that I have a Tikka T3 it serves me for both game and bench because its so dang accurate and fun to shoot.

There goes that idea!

Actually, the "older" style pads are hard, but shouldn't be too much of a problem with the little 7. I used my .338-06 Mnt rifle in it's original laminated stock w/ old pad for a few years. It was stout, but not unbearable, and I'm not a "tough guy".

mine does have the solid recoil pad, and when shooting 180's you sure as hell know when it goes off! i tried to take it off to replace it but it is glued on so i decided not to mess with it.

Have rem 700 LSS in '06 with Leup. 2.5x8 VXIII riding on top. After more than 10 trips to the rifle range and at least 10 different combinations of loads: diff. primers, powders, brass and bullets, I find this rifle to be very particular on what it is fed. I am now getting 1" groups at 100yds. using:55 grs. IMR4350-CCI 200 primers, Rem brass and Sierra 165 gr. Spitzer Boat Tail. Tried using Nos. Bal. Tip at 165 gr. and groups spread to 2" plus. Fed Gold Medal primers also open it up. I have the scope mounted using the recommended Leup. 700 mounts. The rear mount hangs over the action opening to the front by 1/4 inch and the front mount hangs over the action opening to the rear by 1/8", I do not like the looks of it but the rifle shoots well for being so light. AT the range I spend 2/3 hrs. at a session, using several rifles on each trip. The '06 LSS after a while beats me up at the shoulder--so much so that I am unable to shoot any more when the pain starts. I just ordered a MAG. PAST recoil harness type and a slip on recoil pad , just to use at the range. The rifle came with more steps in the trigger than the statue of Liberty. Spent $35. at loco(not a mis-spelling) gunsmith and now the trigger is 1 to 1 1/2 no creep. The nice thing about this rifle is that it puts 3 shots at 100yds inside a quarter--with a cold and clean barrel-- this is ideal for a hunting rifle. After warming up, the groups open up to 1"/1 1/2". Pleased with this gun so far. Rem. should have put mountain /LSS on the barrel. They just put it in their ads and had the gun writers use it in their articles on the subject rifle. Any ideas on the scope mounts? I would like silver that fits perfectly on the rifle rather than hang over like the Leup. mounts do. Rifle cost $625 at Cabela's, Wheeling -Last summer. I like to mount my own scope but they volunteered and the jerk broke a screw off in the gun. They got me a new rifle in a week and gave me Rem hats and sweat shirts and a half doz. lens pens. Dept mgr. and store mgr. were very nice about it. Had to take 5 trips 70 miles, one way ,to get everything straightened out. Nice trip, all open highway. If you plan to use this rifle just for deer any of the cals. will do, but consider the versatility of the "06. (110 grs.bullets all the way up to 240 grs.Woodleigh) Nick

I almost went 260, but decided to go 7-08 when I bought mine (black bear capable then). I figured 3006 would be a stout kicker and several of you have confirmed it.
My question is... I have the hard recoil pad - can a person buy the new R3 pad and it will fit well?

See? it is a tooth rattler. Plus I am in love with my new (old) 1969 Rem 700 BDL 30-06 tack driver I just bought. Has a pachmeyer recoil pad on it (don't know if its stock) and it recoils significantly less than my Tikka of comparable weight.

What factory shells seem to shoot the best out of the Mountain LSS 7mm/.08 for all you guys that own this rifle? I've had some luck with the Rem. Accu-tips, but am still looking to play around a bit. Thanks for any input

does anyone know why this discussion of the LSS is way too wide for my computer screen. I have to scroll left and right to read the comments? This happens every once in a while and I do not know how to make the contents fit the page. thanks.

I think it's because of the picture.
I have no idea how to change it.

Alright- new toy. Found a 1 y/o 7/08 LSS here locally for $480 inc rings/bases and the reloading dies. Didn't get burned. Now looking to find a Leupie 2x7 VX2 when the wallet fills up a bit more again.

Thanks guys! Really like the way this handles, can't wait to shoot it.
