I found some old 300 Savage cartridges in an old Western SuperX Box at my dad's house. Following I've added several pictures. I was wondering if anyone might be able to determine the age of the ammunition? I can tell you the the Savage 99 that these cartridges go with was manufactured in 1948-49 and is an EG model. I did fire 2 of the rounds, 1 Western SuperX and 1 Peters, and they worked just fine. I have left 15 Western SuperX cartridges, 3 Peters cartridges, and 1 Remington UMC cartridge.

From left to right, Remington UMC cartridge (this one appears to be a 180 gr bullet, the others 150 gr bullets), Western SuperX, Peters

Thanks for looking, and for your insights as to the age of the cartridges!

Core-lokts have been around since 1940 if i recall correct and the silvertip came out about the same time as the rifle. Ammo could be from there on into the 1950's.

Maybe somebody else can narrow it further.

The ammo was made before 1962 as there is no child warning inscribed on the box, made mandatory in 1962.

Hey Rups:

Oct. 2004, I bought a Rem.722, .300 Sav.Cal, from a elderly gent, who got that rifle & Western 150 Silver Tip shells in Nov.1950. Said he hunted over 35 yrs. with it. His hunting buds have passed and so he was done with hunting.

. Well, he misplaced that 1st box of shells so bought others along the years. Cleaning out a shed, he found them which he decided to finally sell the rifle.
.
. Nov.06,2004, I got a small 4-pt, 120 lbs, with those .300 Silver-tips. One shot in the neck flipped it upside down. The bullet never went thru & I still have it & the shell.

. Still have the box in the barn some where. So, 1949-1950 would be along those years. Have 6 bronze tips too.

The "Division of Olin Industries, Inc." statement was on the Western box from 1945 to 1955.

Thanks for the insights - it seems I can reasonably assume the Western cartridges were made sometime in 1948 (year of the Savage 99 manufacture) to 1955. The Remington and Peters cartridges are most likely around the same age.

Another question - other then reasons of sentimentality, is there any reason to hold on to the cartridges? Collectability?

That box, if it were pristine and was full with its original cartridges would have some 'collector's value'. As it is, and with a mix-and-match assortment of cartridges, its main value is in their shootability. Have a "blast" with them!

I thought as much. I may shoot one or two on occasion, but I think for reasons of sentiment they will not get used up in my lifetime. I have some new Hornady and Remington loads to use as well.

As a consequence of having fire of 40 or so rounds in the past year, I happen to have 39 once-fired brass cases. Knowing that 300 Savage ammunition may not always be readily available, I've been thinking about learning reloading as well. If anyone lives in the SE WI area and is willing to teach a young guy how to reload, I'd be all ears!

It'd be fun to make a display of them and perhaps a few others. The Silvertips are especially lookers.
