The experts being my 11 and 12 yo stepsons. No school today so the boys wanted eggs, bacon and waffles to celebrate. I got out the Steen's Cane syrup that I bought online after a recent thread here. I wanted to see what had all you Southern boys so excited. The boys tried some on their waffles, said they really liked it, now can they have their maple syrup. I tried it, I really like it. I probably don't like it quite as much as maple syrup, but maybe that's just regional loyalty. IMO it's the only kind of pancake syrup I've ever tried that's even on the same planet with real maple syrup. I guess we'll continue to keep some around.

Well this expert ONLY uses maple syrup on pannycakes. I think I still have 4 or 5 gallons around. I don't think I'll live long enough to use it all.

I was born in the Deep South and raised on pure cane syrup and still like it but I'd have a hard time if I had to choose between good cane syrup and good maple syrup.

Somebody recently posted a photo of a big can of Vermont maple syrup. Made me drool enough to wet my pants from the outside.

The last maple syrup that I had years ago came from Canada. Good grub!

I like both. Real maple is wonderful, a treat to savor. On the other hand, Steen's Cane syrup is wonderful, a treat to savor.

One of our inters in past years sent us a case of Steen's and I am the only one here who really likes it. My heart is not broken.

I've always preferred maple syrup to cane syrup and I was brought a tad further south than was Ken. In fact, I use a fake maple syrup made from sugar, water and maple flavoring. For even more heresy I have always preferred the taste of oleomargerine to that of butter.

One of the most delicious flavor combinations there is...maple syrup breakfast sausage!

Not the biggest thing (but still poignant) that I miss about having Carol Anne with me is her sourdough buckwheats. After just a couple of months shy of 24 years, I'm still not used-to that yet. I've forgotten the flavors but remember that they were the stuff of bliss.

Fort Deposit, Alabama about 40 miles south of Montgomery. I thought you were from Marion Junction. If you were raised in Evergreen I have to retract the statement....not that it matters.

I love real maple syrup. Cane syrup is good too.

Hell, no!

That's ultra-watered sugar with corn syrup added.

No argument there!

Especially whole honey rather than that over-filtered or over-cooked sorta-honey-flavored sweet stuff that the stores sell these days.

Ain't it marvelous what God does with honey bees what ain't what anybody'd call geniuses! laugh

As I miss Mom's overnight yeast buckwheats, perhaps about the same thing. I have her recipe somewhere but they don't turn out the same.
