I think it just might be how you were raised. Cane syrup went on biscuits and maple syrup went on pancakes around our house but there was always raw honey in the pantry.

I was brought up a tad farther south than was Ken. South of Evergreen, Jay (FL), St Stephens, Smith's Station, Notasulga, Newbern? Daphne? Gulf Shores? Mobile? Pensacola? Fort Deposit, Alabama about 40 miles south of Montgomery. I thought you were from Marion Junction. If you were raised in Evergreen I have to retract the statement....not that it matters. Small world! I used to hunt a farm just outside of Fort Deposit, awesome place and great times! I really enjoyed the Christmas parade one of the times we had to head into town for gas. BTW. Love em both but I understand honey and maple syrup are one of the few sweeteners that our bodies process differently than anything sugar. Supposed to be better for you IIRC.

I don't get to enjoy it any more, but I'll never forget my Grandmother pulling out a sheet of hot, homemade biscuits from the oven after dinner and getting out the butter and cane syrup. Desert just didn't get any better. Seems it was always in an old liquor bottle and had sugar crystals on the bottom. Maple syrup is ok if all you are going to put it on is pancakes made from a box mix.

There's a place around here that makes fresh sausages with a small dose of Steen's in them. Different, but pretty good too.

Cane syrup all the way here. Up until about 5 years ago my family still crushed our own sugar cane in a mill that was powered by a horse. A couple of families got together each year and did it and my great grandfather cooked it.

Ain't nothin better than good, homemade cane syrup!!!
I still remember stripping sugar cane, and squeezing the juice. My grandmother would cook the syrup in a large black kettle over a open fire. We'd spend hours skimming the juice as it cooked, then strained it in a croker sack, then a flannel sheet.
Hot biscuits and syrup, couple duck eggs, and homemade sausage. Best breakfast you'd ever want...

I can understand comparing cane syrup to aunt Js or mrs buttersworth; but to attempt to hold it up against real maple syrup.....I don't think one can reasonably do so.....fer christs sakes, it's maple syrup!

I have always preferred the taste of oleomargerine to that of butter.
never live that one down I have never had 'steens cane syrup', might look around for it in a skeptical kind of way. But, the tradition and stories from down home sound pretty nice.

Most of the outlanders who get maple syrup are stupid enuff to think tat the light amber is what maple syrup is about. Cane syrup is like sweet water compared to dark amber. Three grades of maple syrup light ,medium and dark. A guy I know gets light amber from his uncle. He tried giving me a jug and I near broke the bottle over his head. I had a gallon of pure dark amber and there is NO comparison.

Good cane syrup you should have to cut it with a knife and then heat it to pour it.

Don't like the sweet stuff much, pancakes are wrapped in bacon or a sausage, but still enjoy this in the winter from my years of living in Canada. http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/443416
