What can I say? As a father, I couldnt be more proud of my five year old son catching his first salmon. I got home from work around 5 oclock and my boy asked if we could go fishing, an hour later we were on the water. A quick boat run and we were soaking bait. I was rigged up pulling herring and my son wanted to use the pink bait (cured-prawns). I got him set up using a prawn/spinner combo that looked deadly. There were a few boats around and most looked like they had been there all day trolling with very little to show for the effort. After we were all situated and lines in the water I was teaching my son to watch his rod tip and if it started to bounce he should let me know. On the first pass through the hole I glanced back to see his rod bouncing like crazy. I couldnt believe it! Yanked the pole out of the holder and confirmed fish-on and handed the rod to my little man. I wasnt sure what he would do but he grabbed a hold and started cranking. I held on just above the cork for leverage and safety, didnt want to see my Loomis/Calcutta go into the drink. I could tell once I saw the fish that it wasnt huge and actually thought it was a steelhead. When my son got the fish close to the boat I grabbed the net and made a dip but managed to bump the fish and he made another run. My son cranked some more and brought him back and I dipped againthis time the hooks came flying out of the water and I watched them go sailing by and the worst sinking feeling came over me as I knew we lost the fish. I glanced back down towards the water and I have no idea how but the fish was in the net. No more messing around and the net and fish were in the bottom of the boat and I handed the bonker to my boy. Get him right between the eyes, I told him and my son proceeded to make me even more proud. We hugged and hollered and did the happy fish dance celebrating what has to be one of my best experiences outdoors ever. The fish is a beautiful Jack salmon fresh from the sea and he even wears the lice to prove it. Im sure there will never be a finer fish for the barbeque. As the saying goes some people have all the luck, today Im glad to say Im some people.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

Great job guys! I suspect you may as well go get yourself another rod! I grabbed the net and made a dip but managed to bump the fish You know, that isn't the first time that has happened, in fact sometimes the fish gets knocked off the line! In fact I heard tell about some people dropping fish overboard after they've been cleaned!!!

Thanks everyone, it was truly a highlight. My little man has been walking on air ever since and he even insisted we take his fish to the local sporting goods store (G.I. Joe's) to weigh it and get his picture taken and receive his award ($10 towards a Shimano reel). The lunker weighed in at a whopping 8lbs...........the perfect size salmon for a first.

Arty,
Yep, just got it. Are you using Photoshop? I need to learn how to use that program. I use a simple editor program called photoimpact, it's a couple clicks and away I go.

Spike That was done on plain old Microsoft Photo Editor... All programs should have a "balance" adjustment feature. All I did was add a little light and while it washed some colors it did a decent job for little effort. art
