I had the privilege of helping my step son bag his first buck yesterday evening. After a LONG hike through some tough terrain, we got to where we wanted to hunt Exhausted and bleeding from briers, only to hear "Hey" from a fellow hunter, right where we wanted to be. It was early so no harm, no foul, we headed down a long clear cut a few hundred yards down, and set up on some trails coming out of the thicket. The buck came out early and gave me a 25-30 yard shot. I knew if I took a deer and Jordan didn't he would be Really Really bummed out. This is his 3rd year hunting without success the first two. (He plays high school baseball & has very little free time to hunt) Anyway. I broke out a small tube, moved it to doe grunt, and blew the call away from the deer, and down the wood line toward Jordan. After Several soft grunts, I got the buck heading his way. Then all I could do is watch and hope he closed the deal. MY heart was Pounding out of my chest as I saw him ranging the deer with the rangefinder, and then raise his crossbow. He made the 35-40 yard shot look easy, and I heard a big THWAK. The deer ran back to me and I just voiced a "breeep" and got him to look at me, then he tipped over. The shot was a tad high, but the buck only made it about 45 yards.. So Job Well done. I was so happy to be there for him in that moment, and all though I don't have biological children of my own, I am SUPER Proud of this young man, and love him like he is my own. I thanked God last night for the experience and the blessing of the day. As we were approaching Jordan's buck for the first time we passed by my stand, in the corner of my eye I caught movement about 20 yards to the left of my tree. A VERY nice 140ish 8pt had just stepped into the cut. Jordan said Oh NO we should have waited! and then he waited for me to get upset. I said to him. "If I had killed that buck, I would be less happy than I am right now for you!" Its no big deal, I know where he lives..

His high school recruited him in the 7th grade, & he played Varsity & had college looks as a freshman. The kid is going places, but it was good for him to Get out and be a kid..

Good job and a hearty congrats!
I agree with huntsman a bit though. Grins.
Sports would cut into my fall hunting time, and as such it was one or the other. Never did sports as I enjoyed the outdoors time too much.
But you are seeming to manage both somehow. Congrats.

Congrats! That is really awesome; I think it says an awful lot when a man can look at a buck like that, shrug, and be genuinely happy for a youngster new to the sport. Freakin brilliant!

You never forget your first deer. And he will remember Who took him. Now take him moose hunting and cash in that chit......
