Wondering if anyone here has tried this ammunition, a search of varrious web sites shows its putting the 150 SST out at around 2,720 fps.

If you have some, how about pulling a bullet and checking what weight of powder hornady is using. Nothing up hodgdon's web site

I just got some from Cabela's and the reviews seem favorable. Don't know when I will get to try them. Figured I would snag them as they are hard to find. Anyone plan on using them this year or used them already?

I have taken a whitetail buck and an antelope doe with this ammo. Accuracy from my featherweight is excellent. The deer was about 30 yards, and the antelope @ 240. Performance was fine, the 1 recovered bullet was a classic mushroom.

Since posting I have been told on another forum that Hornady mix two Superformance powders. Enquiries to Hodgdon got no where.

It would appear this ammo is giving about 100 fps above other powders.

We took another sambar last weeks that ran close to 200 kgs live weight with these 150grn SSTs over RL-15

Hmmmmmmmmmm... generally, there's no "free ride". Increased muzzle velocity usually equals to increased chamber pressure using the same weight bullet.

I wonder what kind of chamber pressure that ammo is generating?!? confused

I think the Superperformance powder is created to maintain a peak pressure longer, rather than peaking higher than SAAMI specs. So rather than peaking to SAAMI spec and quickly lowering as the bullet travels down the barrel or slowly building to SAAMI spec as the bullet travels down the barrel, the powder is configured to start burning fast to generate max pressure and continues to burn and maintain pressure for the duration of the bullet travel in the barrel.

If that is indeed accurate, then it sounds as though they are creating custom powder mixes for every load.

Yes, Rory (Calhoun), you may be exactly correct... or at least, let's HOPE so, eh? Otherwise, a nice ol' Model 99 might go "KA-BOOM!!!" frown

I tried to find where I read about the powder mix, no luck. It was from another 99 owner who chased Hodgdon & Hornady all over the place until he got an answer. Of course he wanted to duplicate the load using the same components, thats where he hit the snag. Hornady would not tell him the mix or even if one of the powders was only supplied to hornady.

It sure bumps the old 300 along eh? We wont see that ammo down here as there is very limited interest in the 300sav. Ive finally put my " bitza" together, rem 600 action, rem 722 minty take off barrel & a stock provided by a member here, cases also supplied by friends here

Just found a little more on this. The powder is a proprietery (spelling ) blend put together for Hornady. Not available to reloaders, it has a presure rating of 45,000 below the SAAMI 46,000. So there you have it, based on the permormance of the SST over here on sambar deer, I think this might be the best off the shelf ammo you could buy

I did try this ammo yesterday in my Rem 760 and Sav 99EG. It shot very well in both using peep sights. I was impressed enough that I will keep it in mind should I ever decide to stop reloading. Didn't chrono anything and the brass looked fine after shooting.

Hornady is 2-bucks a round. Rem core lock is a buck-fifty. At 100 yards the 2-dollar round is moving 145fps faster than the buck-fifty round. The deer's brain cant do the math when the 150gr hunk of lead zips through their chest.

I was able to pick up two boxes of this stuff from Sportsmansguide.com with free shipping - ended up being less than $29 per box. I've been able to find the Remington, and on occasion the Federal, varieties locally for $35 plus, more from online w/shipping. I hope to give a try this year.

G'day Graham, thats a good price. Its difficult to find cases over here. George sent me 100 older REM UMC, and I picked up a set of RCBS dies on US Ebay that included a form die to reduce 308win brass. It would seem like and easy form, but there is a fair bit of work involved with the neck turning.

Just thought this new hornady ammo might be a great option for 300sav owners over there, those 150 SSTs are a great bullet

I've never tried the Superformance .300 Savage ammo. It sounds like good stuff.

H-335 has always been a sleeper powder, for me at least, in the .300 Savage but there is very little published data for that powder/cartridge combination.

Down the page a ways:

Pulling a bullet revealed a charge of 44.7 grains of dark, silver gray ball powder with flattened grains that appeared to be identical with Hodgdon Superformance Powder, a reasonable assumption, but of course we must not identify powder by visual comparison. It also strongly resembles H414. Have a look at the components in the picture.
