I just don't understand it.
If I was seeing deer everyday,
there would be venison happening.

Thanks for the big "Welcome to MN, Bill". Rained from the time we left the motel until we hit the MN border, than it turned to snow. Some of the flakes were as large as post it notes. Ran out of the heavy stuff about 15 miles East of Worthington. Than it was occasional flurries the rest of the way.

Every year I am amazed by the sheer volume of hunting stuff that I have.

It's all in the downstairs bedroom. Washed, de-scented, and in scent-lock storage bags.

My only thing left to really do is decide what rifle to use opening morning. It's all fiddle-farting around for the next few weeks. Maybe go shooting a few more times.

Opener is the 43-year old guy's Christmas.

Opener? What is this opener you speak of? Is there a ball game starting or something?

I am happy to say that I broke a seven year dry spell last evening. I used my new combo gun (Baikal 12 gauge over .308)to take a nice 8 point buck.
The last deer I got prior to this was two years before the heart bypass surgery which occurred in 2008.
Naturally I was wearing my Chickenbuck hat and got a picture of the deer with hat laying on top of him.

there was nothing moving here last night, I did see one small 4 point (8 pointer for you easterners) whitetail that was 500 yards off. nothing on the road either. we'll see if I can get one tomorrow.

way to go Stan on the deer! hopefully I can shoot a WT doe in Wyoming this weekend, I'm out of deer meat and I hate to burn through all my antelope right away.

getting closer to rifle season!

This is excellent news Stan! Very good to hear. Congratulations!

Do you have any pictures for us? I'd love to see this buck.

I'm very excited for you Stan! I had a buck drought from 98-04 and man, did it seem like forever. I'm glad you broke that spell!

It is funny.

grin

Even though Ryan is basically within slingshot range, once you cross the red river you count one side.

Or you do the modified version "4x4"

smile

I always figured that, since I have shot odd-numbered bucks before (7 and 9 total points) that the "add them up" method makes more sense than the "one side" method. 4x3 or 5x4 does work too, I guess.

Do you ever regret not shooting a deer just so you could test out a caliber?

In 07 I had a new rifle, a Ruger 77 SS, in .358 Win. I was having a rough year. My best good friend just died, I lost my job, and I had pneumonia. On the last day of my hunt on the iron range, I had two does come in curious as heck to my coughing spells. One spooked, but the other kept coming back every time I coughed. I had the cross hairs on her a few times, but didn't have the energy to get it done.

I still wish I did.

Dangit! Now I need another .358 Win. grin
