I now have my Ruger up and running and as promised in my previous string, here is a follow up. Using information gathered here plus Mule Deer's No. 1 article, I modiified my rifle by putting a card shim in the barrel channel and putting locktite on the fore-end screw. This settled the barrel right down and gave me good groups with Hornaday 35 gr. factory loads. Remington soft points were all over the map however. In the future I will make the shim permanent with a liberal dose of Acraglas.

When my Redding dies came in, I loaded the 40 gr. A-Max in front of 13 grs. Lil Gun, the new "standard" Hornet load. I used Win. small rifle primers and seated the bullet out to the grooves -- a whopping 1.945". The bottom line? Five, five shot groups averaged .925 inch. In all of those groups, there was only one tell-tale flyer. If I throw out that one shot the other 24 measure .6875". Not quite the half inch groups quoted by some, but good enough for me!

I may try the recommended small pistol primers or the Remington 6 1/2s if I can find them. Truth is I couldn't be happier! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
