Was just looking at some "rogues' gallery portraits" some of 'em the ugliest "humans" whom I've ever seen outside my shaving mirror accused of a litany of crimes. And the range of the crimes that they've been accused of led me to wonder
What's the absolutely worst way that humans can offend each other?
Murder? Rape? Child-abuse? Kidnapping? Arson? Theft? Burglary? Larceny? False witness? Lynching? Assassination? Terrorism? Serial crimes? Malicious prosecution of the innocent? Abortion?
What say you?

I recently left corrections after 14 years. I was exposed to every heinous crime imaginable. I am loath to recall the worst of them as they are so absolutely appalling. The worst of them involved infants, the most innocent and defenseless among us. The absolute worst of the offenders would come alive with excitement when telling of their deeds. I am glad to be out of that environment. My wife says I've changed for the better since leaving.

I gave this some thought, and came to the conclusion that it's not for me to judge....

Mart I hear ya. Can't wait to retire and move on to something better. It's a daily struggle not to let it eat my soul. I'd have to agree that the worst offense is that committed against a child. Hearing what some evil animals do to kids bothers me more than anything done directly to me.

The distinction between judging and opining should be obvious to any creature higher than a slug in the garden.
Everyone should have an opinion about the offense.
No one should judge the offender except as duly authorized by law.
Are these crucial distinctions so far beyond Campfire comprehension? If so, God help us!

I knew a LEO many years ago who worked undercover narcotics and resigned because it was killing him inside the way people acted and the things they would do for drugs.

What say you? Psychopathic torture-murderers, where torture is the primary motive. In most cases, the crime has a sexual motivating factor. Here's are some examples. Each on this list is truly evil, and the stories are not for the faint of heart. Tommy Lynn Sells John Wayne Gacy Dennis Rader Theresa Knorr, Tortured and murdered her own children. If there was a hell, there would be a special place for her. Charles Ng Leonard Lake Paul Bernardo Ian Brady Gary Heidnik David Parker Ray Westley Allan Dodd George Hodel Jeffrey Lundgren Edmund Kemper H. H. Holmes Adolfo Constanzo John Edward Robinson Andrei Chikatilo Jeffrey Dahmer Daniel Barbosa Pedro Alonso Lopez Paul Cho.

Agree. And perhaps child abuse is a form of torture.

I just finished my 20th year as a LEO. I think it is very hard to just use a broad label and say that murder, torture or whatever is the worst.
In my mind the devil really is in the details. Not all murders are created equal. There is a huge difference between a shooting and and tightening wire coat hangers around someone's extremities so tight the limbs die for lack of blood and then cutting the wire. This will kill but it takes a good while. Both instances fit "murder" but they are not in the same league.
As an academic exercise this is interesting. Get a gathering of cops from across the country together and have this discussion over drinks and the specifics are pretty unreal. People can be so much more vicious than animals.
