Traditional German mauser sporters, those made pre-WWII, often have a large dovetail machined across the top of the receiver ring for the front scope base. I'm not an engineer but It seems this has to drastically weaken the integrity of the receiver. Do any of you folks have one of these? Are they safe to fire? Any thoughts would be welcome.

.

I once owned a 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenaur 6.5x54 Carbine that was so machined across the receiver ring for a claw mount base.

I shot it quite a bit w.o issue one, before someone offered me 3x my cost for it - the buyer said he had an orphaned Zeiss scope with the mounts soldered to the scope tube that should fit.
