What are some of your best loads for the 168 gr. TSX in 300 Win Mag? I have been using H4350 and H4381sc in the past. I have read velocities around 3200 fps here and in other places. Are these loads accurate at this velocity and if so what are the ingredients?

My most accurate load with the 168 in TSX is 75.0 gr of RL 22 with a Federal 215 Primer in Federal cases. The velocity is only around 3030 fps, but it will drive thumb tacks at 100 yards. I cannot tell you what kind of terminal performance it has had, because I have never recovered one from any of the deer or moose I have shot. I also have never had to track an animal shot with the 168 TSX. Of course most of my shots have been at pretty close range -- under 250 yards.

I have also used H4831SC, but it was not quite as accurate as RL22 -- still around an inch.

I used to drive every bullet to the max velocity. I now load up till the accuracy maxes out, and trust that, since the 300 mag has more snot than a 30-06, and a 30-06 is usually more than enough, I am all set for anything as large as moose, bear, and deer.

I had excellent results with 75grs RL22, Fed 215, and 180 gr NP. Gave me 1/2 or better every time!

One of my most accurate loads for the 300 WinMag was 73.0 gr of IMR4350 with a Fed 215 primer and 180 grain Hornady BTSP. It shot real tight groups, but the velocity I was getting made the bullet too fragile to be a solid performer on large game. I think the velocity of that one was around 3140 fps, which ain't bad for a garden variety WinMag. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I love H-1000 in the 300 Win also. 81 grains Win Cases Federal 215 primer 180 grain TXS and an Extreme spread of 5 fps Have not used the 168's in the 300

Why wouldn't they be accurate at that or any velocity? The accuracy will depend on the individual gun and its preferences.

My suggestion is try powders in the burn rate range of 4350 or slower. H4831, R-19, R-22, VV N160, VV N165 and the like would be my first choices, and H4350 would be the fastest Id consider. I use 74grs of R-19 with 180 Hornadys to generate 3150fps and get .75" groups consitently from my Rem 700 300 Win Mag. With bullets in the 165/168 range my first try would be those powders listed above. The even slower ones such as R-25, H1000, 7828, and the like might work, but they tend to match up better with heavier for caliber bullets.

What shoots good in my gun might be horrible in yours. The velocity really has little to do with the accuracy, but its a common misconception that you must sacrifice accuracy to gain velocity. Every rifle I have .243, .280Rem (2 of them), 7mmRM, 30-06, & .300Win Mag has a max load that consitently produces sub 1"/sub MOA groups. The 7mmRM shoots screaming hot loads in to little cloverleafs. Also, while developing loads for my 300Win Mag, I found 2 loads that produced identical velocity. One is the current R-19 load I use, and the other was with R-22. Same bullet moving at the same velocity from the same brass and primers at the same seating depth, yet the R-19 groups were consistently @.75" and all less than 1", while the R-22 loads were always generally twice as spread out, @1.5". Bbl harmonics! And just a very slight change in powder burn rate can affect this enourmously.

One of my 280s wont shoot Balistic Tips. I was told those are accurate bullets...if it wont shoot them then it must be there's something wrong with the gun. Same gun stacks Hornady Interlocks of 139gr, 154gr, and 162grs all in sub 1" groups (the 154 being the absolute fave at .5" groups), and close enough to the same point of impact that I can interchange bullets without changing my scope for hunting.

All the forgoing is my opinion or experience YMMV.

Can't wait to try the 168 TSX in my Sako when it gets back from Hill Country Rifles with the new .300 Win Mag Lilja tube on it. I had good luck with the 165's when it was a .300 Wby and the 140's have worked great in my 7 mag. A hell of a bullet for sure.
