I was out a couple of days go and shot some fall colours here in south central Ontario. The colours are a little past peak here, but not far north the leaves are mostly down.

I returned last weekend from southwest Colorado where the snow on the 4th of Oct turned many leaves brown. I did not see many areas of red and the colors seemed to be at least a week behind normal dates. The Aspens on the west side of the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, AZ appeared close to peak, mainly yellow, two days ago. I have barely begun processing images from my CO trip.

We were at about 7500 to 8000' in so. Idaho the last few days. Even though it was getting to the mid 20's, the leaves hadn't really turned. There were whole groves of quakies that were still completely green.

I just got back this evening from Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico and the colors around Apache Peaks and south to Taos are near peak. From Taos to Sante Fe the Cottonwoods are still a couple of days away. In Georgia it is still a couple weeks off. I am off to New England to shoot in a day so I will post some stuff from up there as well.

This year there were a lot of green leaves on the trees until a couple of weeks ago, but it had been in the 20's a few nights before, and snowing every now and then. Finally the leaves have turned and fallen off the trees, but it has warmed slightly. Instead of the usual -2 degrees and colder, the temperatures are in the lower 40's during the day, and then it cools to the lower 30's at night.

By this time of the season -10 and colder is very possible, so I can't complain smile

Where I live in South Central MT, our leaves in town (mostly Ash) froze and turned brown. Along the Yellowstone the Cottonwoods weren't affected. Here are a couple pics of the trees on the river taken from my back door. Hope they come out alright as I am not too happy with photo bucket!!

Been spending a lot of time on the rivers lately, and this one is likely still swimming.

It looks like all of our leaves are going to drop off before they develop any color

For the most part, leaf fall is controlled by day length, not cold. The cold is what gives the bright colors, though. Without the cold, the decreasing day length makes them just turn brown and fall off.

The colors in north Georgia should be peaking this weekend. This was yesterday morning.
