Have an opportunity for a trade on a ruger 77 hawkeye stainless in 358 Win. With Leupy 2-7x. For my super blackhawk hunter.

Is this caliber worth playing around with?

Mine is awesome, same rifle but I have a VXIII 1.75-6x32 on mine.

225 Accubond @ 2450fps and under 1" @ 100yds from mine. It also shoots the 200 Hornady PSP, 200gr RN, 220gr Speer and 158gr XTP very much good.

When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

For deer, bear or elk in timber under 200 yards, it is beautiful! Brass availability isn't a problem, and you can load pistol bullets for plinking. A 2-7 leup is a perfect match up top also. As long as you don't want to shoot across canyons with it, it is a very underappreciated chambering. That big .358 hole in the barrel lightens the ruger up nicely as well, it also lights up critters!

try a 250 grain speer
http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000212453
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/65...358-diameter-250-grain-spitzer-box-of-50
over 44 grains of IMR 4064
in that 358 win with a 215 fed primer that combo worked for almost 30 years in my and my friends browning BLR 358 on many elk hunts.
sight in 3.5" high at 100 yards puts you very close to dead on at 200 yards and about 10" low at 300 yards, while that might not sound impressive its deadly on elk where I hunt where shots over 250 yards are almost non-existant

Bought one of the same rifle for my wedding gift to myself this summer and have loved it thusfar (range only). Hoping to get to try it out on a whitetail thanksgiving weekend. I've had great luck with 200gr interlocks over varget so far.

I have the exact same rifle topped with a Leupold VX2 2-7x33 and it is probably my favorite rifle. It is a nicely balanced, accurate, and is a pleasure to carry. It has been elk hunting, deer hunting and hog hunting, but to date has only taken a deer thus far.

It is very easy to reload for and Varget and Ram Shot TAC powders work well. My favorite bullet is the 225 grain Partition but, I recently found a small supply of factory 200 grain Winchester Silvertips that also shoot really well. I've never understood why this caliber was never very successful. If I had to reduce my collection down to 2 or 3 rifles, it would be one that I would keep.

I'll always trade a handgun for a rifle, regardless of what the rifle's chambering is.

I'm a big fan of the .358, and would love to have one in a bolt rifle. Mine is a Belgium era Browning BLR, and is actually pretty accurate.

I and my friend both have the Ruger Frontier which is basically the rifle you are looking at in a compact size...great "little" rifle to carry.

If you reload there are all sorts of cast and pistol bullets that you can load for small game, plinking, varmints and just "FUN"...

The .35 Whelen in a compact package, great cartridge very under rated and unappreciated. Lots of loading flexibility especially if you are a handloader. Go for it!
