I have two choices I have to sort out. I will be putting together a Tikka T3 Tactical in 300 Win. It will be used for longish range hunting (up to 500yds) and 1000yd competition in in the local clubs hunter class. Vortex has a good rep around here and excellent dealer support. So looking at a 4x16 or 6x24 PST in First Focal Plane, considering the quality of glass which would be better for my purpose?

Neither is very ideal for both uses.
Out to 500 yds hunting, 4-16 is good, while the 6-24 is very likely to give you grief with parallax during hunting scenarios.
For 1000 yds competition, the 6-24 is the right way to go.

4 x 16 would be my choice
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

If the Vortex he's excellent resolution you will be golden at 1K and the 4X16 will be the better hunting scope
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

The 4-16x PST is the dog of the Vortex line. Vortex openly admits that the glass quality is sub par, and Vortex has an excellent reputation for customer service. Not durability or longevity.

The 2.5-10 was supposed to be the dog of the PST's.
I've had both the 4-16 and the 6-24, both in FFP, side by side, and it was difficult to discern a difference in optical quality. Both were/are excellent for the price of the scopes. The optics in the 6-24's seem to be a little but more consistent, though. I've also been very impressed with the tracking and durability of both scopes, although they only have just over a year and about 1000 rounds each fired under them, so I can't comment on longevity yet. I recently traded the 6-24 for a 5-20 Razor, but the 4-16 is still going strong.
I would go to the LGS and compare both outside the store, and if make sure you have a 4-16 that is optically as good as the 6-24, I'd go with the 4-16. More erector travel, shorter scope tube, and low enough mag for hunting scenarios, while having enough mag for 1000 yard targets.

I have a 2.5x10x44 PST on a 30-06 but have only put ~ 100 rounds through it. Its on a Finnlight and seems a bit bulky, thinking of taking it off and putting it on a Tikka TAC/ 300WM, this is a 'fun' rifle and if scope goes south no real consequence, but the other is a hunting rifle and reliability is a must. I have read varying opinions on 10X at 1000yds and most agree a quality 10X is doable , wonder if the PST is quality enough for this? Probably go with a straight 6X for the Finnlight.

I really like 12x for shooting at 1000 and beyond with my PST's and Razor.
