I love this cartridge! Go hot for T-rex or mild like 45/70.

I love the 458wm.

That is all....

You can even go sub-sonic with Trailboss

according to most gunwriters it went obsolete shortly after they promoted the 458 Lott.

I can hang with a 458. I don't want even a little to do with a Lott.

Ray Ordorica had a slew of different loads for the .458 in the '94 Reloaders Digest. A lot more versatile than most people would give it credit for.

personally I like the 458 win when used at a bit less than most factory ammo power levels , Ive found it works quite well loaded with 405 remington bullets launched at about 2000fps.
now you might be thinking that a 450 marlin or 45/70 might be loaded to those power levels in some rifles and while that might be true, the 458 win loaded to that velocity with that bullet has done a really good job in my experience.
I load my 450 marlin to a 1800fps level with the same bullets and either cartridge makes a very deadly hunting rifle, but if you like bolt actions I think the 458 wins the better choice

Love the old 458 WM myself, just have an old Ruger 'tanger' but, she shoots the 500 gr Woodleigh PP bullets like a varmint rifle, I spect them leaving at 2150 fps, the effectiveness will be there too. wink

Then try the 550's.
Aussies like the 500's for sambar but I like the 550's for larger stuff.

In the last month I've been month my testing has led me to North Fork 450gr bullets over 70gr H-4895 for 2125 fps. A little less recoil and still more than enough for close stuff in the alder patch's.

You guys don' t use scopes in the thick brush though right. A few of use have it on good authority that using a scope in the brush on a big bore will get you killed

Sometimes yes on the scope depending on how thick the brush is and how the time frame is. A scope on 1X is pretty user friendly for fast close work in the thick stuff!

I have used my rifle now for 30 years and it points as much, or more, naturally than any of my shotguns. I haven't removed the 2 1/2 Leupold scope for over a decade and find that at close range I can make hits just a rapidly and accurately with the scope on as with it off. And a lot more accurately at ranges past 50 yards or in thick brush with it on.

Phil. I was really hoping you would see my post and reply. Take a look at the thread a scope will get you killed. And well all posts by the idiot BCD you will see where the satire came from in my post here

500 grains and my old 458 are like PB&J Brudda grin, still 350 grs lighter than an 8 Bore ball. laugh

500's in the .458 WM are a classic combo, for sure.

With all the stuff written about the Lott, being superior to the Winchester, I wonder if the new powders we now have negate much of the Lott "advantage".

I'm also wondering what critters would benefit from 550 gr. over 500 gr. slugs. Seems to me the right 500 would bust about anything, bullet type and construction options being much better now than in years past.
