I;ve not been very active in my Savage 1899/99 collecting in the past year but I did pick up a mint 358 Brush gun and a real nice model 40 supersporter in 30-06. The reason for this post is several years ago I purchased a 1899 250/3000 rifle the later model with a none perch belly stock. There is no question that the gun has been refinished , one of the best refinish jobs I ever seen. The barrel and reciever are stamped with a SAP in a oval I was wondering if this gun had been refinished by Savage. I had the gun Lettered but letter makes no mention of being sent back for a makeover. Is the "SAP" in an oval a mark used by Savage for a returned to the factory gun? The refinish job on this gun is great all markings and stampings are sharp and clear.

The SAP is just a Savage Proof mark, usually seen as SP but they did SAP for a while. Present on all 1899's/99's as far as I know.

The "SAP" proofs that I have record of have been in the 31x,xxx-33x,xxx range. What is the serial range of your rifle?

Rick99: The serial number is 23380X built 1920 shipped 1921. I think its wishfull thinking on my part the gun was refinished by Savage. Thanks for the reply.

It sounds like you might have a later medium weight barrel with ramp front sight...? Does it have the early original forearm or a later one that matches the barrel? Is it serialed to the rifle?

Rick: Has the integral front sight , has the 10 1/8 in. foreend. Does not have the checkered trigger. Wood serialed to gun. The company that the gun was sent Dodge & Seymour Ltd. was a world wide importing company and one of the owners has a connection to Utica NY. In 1922 and 1923 the compnay owner traveled around the world checking on the companys many offices. They sold cars & trucks and sold Ford cars in British India. I wonder if this gun traveled with him?
