I may get a bunch of chewing, name calling or what not but here it goes anyway.I have been shooting bows off and on 20 years or so.I have hunted off and on with them, until firearms season started mostly) over this time. I had my first success 3 years ago and since then my archery gears time in the woods has increased dramatically, funny how a little success can do that.I have shot a PILE of bows for the most part with fingers because I want to. I have never been one to need the latest and greatest but I am a tinker and like trying things out for myself(not buying into hype or advertisement).
Oneida,PSE,Browning,Martin,Hoyt,Mathews,Bear,Parker,Bow Tech, Diamond in compound forms and Bear,Staghorn,Martin,in traditional forms have passed through my hands. So I have been trying to find one to stick it out several years with and I finally did in a 2013 Mathews Chill(yes they have hype an advertising, but this is a nice piece of equipment). I liked the demo bow so much I purchased it. Now I go against the grain completely as I shoot fingers, a drop away with sights and a peep, a short ata bow(many say can't be done) and maintain 2" groups out to 50 yards even though my personal hunting limit is 35 yards. Got some carbon express arrows and rage broadheads I have used in the past with success and went hunting. Had a very bad result on what should have been a slam dunk. Mad at myself( not enough patience),mad at some of my equipment choices(light arrows for one)just all around pdoff. I regrouped the next day, bought some st heads and beat myself up enough I was ready. Later that afternoon I pushed(as it just barely made it out) an arrow through(never happened before, always stayed inside) a mature white-tail doe. I pulled out, gave it about 45 minutes and then followed a red carpet to my doe with my new archery setup.
I wondered about the hype of st broadheads and from what I saw I have a new broadhead for hunting purposes. So I have made a few changes in I have went to 440gr arrows instead of 357grs, from rages to st mags, and from long ata bows to shorter, quieter, faster setup(only difference I see is less forgiving to form errors) and I am perfectly content with my choice to leave the guns home more and more.
Here's a pic of my doe with my new set up
