...Midway and Grafs both have .351 Winchester brass in stock. Not cheap, but it's half the price of original ammo, if you can find it.

yeah, just got 50 cases from midway for 69.00 + shipping. more than I paid for the rifle at a yard sale. haven't loaded any yet maybe tomorrow.

blush No - but I haven't tried yet. The old recoil spring is heavily worn and needs replacement. When I get some other projects done I'll tackle that one. Probably make 10-20 springs which could be sold to other folks who need them.

I have two of them. The one that is apart is in rough shape anyway. This one is in better shape:

I dry fired that one, and the action went "kruuuuppp". Took it down using the takedown screw and found a pile of dried oil inside the receiver, and found the firing pin stuck, too. It's now cleaned up and ready to go.

Tex, have you hunted with this one yet? I inherited my father's 1907 and have about two boxes of factory Winchester ammo for it. At the prices it goes for now I'm not sure I'll shoot it! Instead I bought some .357 Maximum brass and 180 grain RN bullets from Grafs (looks like they still have some). The next project is to turn the Maximum brass into .351SL so I can make up some handloads.

As a point of interest my rifle will chamber and extract a loaded .357 Magnum round. Note: I cycled the action manually for this test. Anyway, I was happy to see this thread as this was the only rifle my father used for practically his whole adult life. I hope to get a deer with it in the next season or two.

No, I have not shot this one. I did fire a few shots through the other one, with some old factory ammo. One box of ammo suffered case splits, the other shot okay. It would do about 3 inches at 50 yards, which I thought was good given the bore condition. I'm real curious to see how this one does with the tang sight.

Hawk has bullets with .025 jackets, which I bet would be nice in the .351, but so far they aren't real eager to answer emails.

I saw those Grafs .351 bullets - they look like either FMJ, or maybe plated lead bullets? I'm not sure if they would expand or not.

Redding dies, FWIW are much less expensive than RCBS

You can usually find old ammo on Gunbroker for ~$2-2.5 a shot, most of it seems at least 40 years old, though I did see one batch that looked like 1970's boxes.

There's a bunch of it on Gunsamerica right now. I have the 1910 401 self loader. I ended up buying a bunch of the expensive Qual Cart stuff but it's about the only way to get it up and running without turning the rims off 414 Supermags. I am very careful about finding all my empties when I'm at the range.

I think there are a bunch of 351 bullets on Auction Arms or at least there were a couple of days ago.

I bought 500 of the Graf's bullets last year. They do appear to be a plated FMJ. I haven't fired, sectioned or weighed them yet but I will this winter. For hunting I bought 500 Remington .358 200 grain Core-Lokt's and .351 bullet sizing die from CH4D. Per my reloading manuals the 1907 will stablize these bullets at 1650 fps or so. For a whitetail deer at close range that should be sufficient. So many projects, so little time.

just ordered bullets from graf's. after getting the recoil spring back in (which was loads of fun) I made up some rounds with 357 mag casings. turned the rim but didn't need to cut a extractor groove. loaded them with 15 grs of 4227 under 200 gr cast gc for a 35 rem sized to .355. fired and cycled just firn. got the quality cart. brass from midway and bumped up to 16.5 gr of 4227 and crono'd them at 1560+/_ 12 fps. accuracy was astounding. 50 yrds was 1.5 with open sites and 62 yr old eyes.
ran out of gas checks and just sixed the 200's which just about wipes out the rebated end for the checks. couldn't hit the paper. I also made some cases from .223 brass worked but what a pain cutting them back to length. also didn't extract as well as the 357's

what a fun little heavy gun.

update
found my gas checks and the sweet little thing puts them all in the black @ 50 yards. I bought this 1907 at a yard sale for 40 dollars. bubba had taken a dremal to the surface to remove rust and pitting. slicked it up and got a new forearm off fleabay.
it's deer season here so am going to start carrying it with me in the truck. those slow old 200's make a nice big hole .

It's a Lyman, IIRC. They are hard to find as the hole spacing is unusual. I'll try to get some detailed photos of it tonight.

Hawk had the 180gr/.025 bullets in stock, so I ordered some. We'll see how they do.

Stalker, thanks for the loading data. I have some info from an old Lyman manual, Cartridges of the World and some internet tidbits. I have a lathe in the basement now so it should be easy for me to make up a collet to hold .223 cases in the three jaw chuck and part them off very quickly to nearly the correct length. I have plenty of once fired military 5.56 so I may give that a try.

I bought a Marble's W13 tang sight which fits the 1905 and the 1907 on eBay last year but it was almost $80 including shipping. There is one out there now with 2 days remaining that looks to be in very good shape.

Hope this helps and looking forward to joining the fun. Please post some pics from a successful hunt.

mart, I forgot to mention that you can make .401 cases from 7.62x39 brass. It is recommended that you anneal the case mouth before expanding and that sounds like a good idea.

Here is the rear sight, which is a Lyman

[Linked Image]

The only marking on it is visible here:

The base screw spacing is 13/16"

I just dusted off my 1907 the other day. I got some of the Graf's bullets as well. They are plated, so be careful when crimping. I loaded them too light and they would not cycle the action. Next loadings will be heavier, using an older Lyman

I was lucky enough the score several boxes of Old West Scrounger as well as a few original Winchester brass. I used my 38/357 dies to load and they function through the action just fine.

Jim how do you address the loose bullet syndrome loading with the 357 dies?
