A better question is what powders worked for you. I load for two 264's now and both like different loads. I have found H1000 works good with 125 gr. Noslers and WC872 is working well with 129, 130 and 140's. A lot of loads have been listed so a search should turn them up for you.

I've tried A LOT of different powders in the .264 WM trying to make an accurate load out of the high BC 140's at 3200 fps or better.

The best powders I've found are WC-872 and RL-33

Top out around 78.5 with the WC and a tad less with the RL.

I am using H1000 with 140's and am getting 3200fps out of a 26" barrel, I also had good results with Retumbo but it wasn't quit as fast.

My only "long range" experience with my .264 Win Mag has been with a 125gr Nosler Partition on a Prarie Goat at about 365 yards, and feral hogs here at the
Ranch out to 300 yards. Works great. And it's one of my favorite calibers.

That being said, I try to keep ALL of my shots under 300 yards.
I know the cartridge is capable of killing at 3 times that range, but I'm just not that comfortable taking a chance on a wounded deer or elk. JMHO.

I had a .264 for a while but I got rid of it. The gun was good, but it was the wrong package for my use.

Long story ... wound up with a barrel that was not what I ordered and the maker (Hart) would not stand behind their mistake despite documentation. My 'smith tried to make the best of it for me but the final product was just too heavy for my intended use.

The throat turned out to be a little too long as well. I couldn't get accuracy out of hunting bullets or light varmint bullets. It did pretty well with the 140 AMAX over about 63 (?) grains of 7828, that just wasn't suitable for what I intended the gun for.

I may try it again someday. The gun is gone, the brass, dies, and bullets remain. smile

Your gunsmith couldt turn down the barrel? Couldnt throat it correctly either? Did you not spec the throat for him?

Really dont care, but you said it and i find it kinda "interesting" that these were even issues on a "custom" build.

One cost me two cases of beer! Back when I was shooting with the USAAMU at Ft. Benning I had one I thought was pretty 'hot' UNTIL Sgt Clyde M. Sheets told me "Mulhern I'll bet you two cases of beer that I can shoot ten rounds from 200 yards into a tighter group using a .22 rifle than you can shoot with that .264!" Being a young and dumb 22 years old I took the old sarge up and he promptly proceeded to shoot ten rounds into a group of 1 1/2" using a Win M52 heavy barrel match rifle to my group that went 3 1/5". He shot irons...I used a scope!! He shot prone/tight sling....I shot off a bench! I NEVER could get that rifle/scope combo to shoot great and it finally went down the pike to some other sucker! I don't see much use for that large over/bore capacity case when I can stick in 38 grs. of Varget into a 6.5x47 Lapua case and promptly shoot the center out of the ten ring on the NRA LR target using a good rifle! And I've got better than 2000 rounds through this 6.5 of mine now and it's still shooting strong whereas with that .264 WM cartridge my barrel would have been 'schitt-canned' most likely at 1000 rounds...if it went that much!!

A 264 barrel will last for a lifetime of hunting big game.

There are other rifles to compete with and practice with.

Fluted.

I did spec the throat, it just didn't work out the way I wanted. It came out right with the dummy cartridge I gave him to work from. I wanted to use a bunch of different bullets, wide range of weights, and the ogives were too different, seating depths too different.

I [bleep] up. My fault, not his.

Funny how the correct spelling of my favorite word didn't get bleeped!
