It doesn't make sense to pass up a great deal on a rifle you like. Ever. smile

There's also nothing wrong with owning a 308 and a 30-06. I own both and have never regretted it.

Nothing wrong with either and what does making sense have to do with it. That said, I currently own both and if doing it over again, I would only own the 308. Matter of fact, the 30-06 is soon to be on the chopping block.

"make sense?" . . . nope. But when did making sense play into the equation when buying a rifle?

That's a great rifle combo package. Especially if you reload. Buy one caliber bullet and load for two rifles. Those two rifles will handle any game in North America besides the dangerous big bears. Now you just need a 300 wsm and you are all set for a bunch of shooting fun!

Too much crossover, I would keep the 308 and spend the extra money on tricking it out.

1st and foremost, if you are not hunting anything that requires bullets heavier than 180 grs... Forget the '06! However, I have both, and the '06's are mostly used for range work and cast bullets...

Nothing wrong with the venerable '06, it's just that for medium sized game or smaller, the .308 works every bit as well. (I only hunt deer...)

Buying a rifle is a personal and emotional decision! OTOH, how would you expect to earn your status as a certifiable Rifle Loonie without buying both? ... I hereby rest my case... grin

Depends where you are and what you hunt. Loaded with lighter bullets, the .308 makes a fine deer rifle. Develop a 30-06 load using 180s or 200s for moose and big bad bruins. Either one of the rifles would do for both of course, but where's the fun in having fewer rifles when you could have (and almost justify) more?

Whichever floats your boat. For me it would be the .308.

Two peas in a pod, mostly, but the 30/06 is just "a leetle beet mo betta". Both are overkill for deer, however, with todays good bullets. Buy the 30/06 if it is a smoking deal, then sell both and get something really nice in 24-26 caliber that is fast.

I'm sorry I can't really give you an answer. At one time I owned a .30-30, .308, .30-06, and .300 WinMag......

I guess, given my past action, I'd say BUY IT!!

Why stop there?

I used a 30-06 almost exclusevely for close to 40 years. Currently own 3 that haven't been hunting in 3 years since buying the 308's. My 308's give me 97% of the bullet speed with 75% of the recoil in equal weight rifles. Or equal recoil, but from a 2 lb lighter Kimber.

I would get the 30-06, then hunt for a couple more of each.

If you've got the extra $, go for it. Just realize that it won't do much the .308 won't.

Or, to put it another way, if you need more than a .308, you need much more than a .30-06. wink
