I saw a 99 today in .300 Sav. SN 96X,XXX drilled & tapped for scope. Wasn't an EG but I have no idea what model it might be. Don't know enough about 99's. I did see a X on the left side of the front ring just above the woodline. Does this have any significance? What does it mean?

No, it's an inspector stamp probably. If you know what an EG looks like & that wasn't it, it was an F or and R. Could have been an RS I suppose but not likely. None of these used the schnable fore end design. The F had a conventional style rounded nose fore end and the R and RS used a beavertail design fore end.

I think those stamps on the recvr have been discussed before. No one knows what they mean. I have a 61 F with a square there.

If you look at the guns forearm, the F is thin and straight, no schnable. The R, at the rear of the forearm, where it meets the recvr, has an inward bevel on both sides. Like a boat tail i would say.

Easiest way to tell is the R will have a 24" barrel and the F 22"

...and the "F" will have a raised barrel boss where the rear sight mounts to the barrel.

If it's light and nimble, it is an "F" (featherweight). If it causes hemorrhoids to pick it up, it's probably an "R".

You try to pick up R's? You must have stumbled onto examples that were missing their wheeled carriages.

Jeez am I going to have to get a gym membership to take my R hunting?

Maybe I could modify the portage canoe dolly to bear the weight of this R. Need to camo it first.

Actually........the easiest way to tell is the F will actually have "99F" stamped on the right hand side of the barrel.

I purchased a model 99 earlier this year in .303 savage. Looking up the serial number on Savage99.com it came up as being made in 1909/1910. There is no model number on the rifle and no letter designation. How do you determine what model you have?

Oh, you just need to read all you can and educate yourself for awhile.

These guys will help you determine by its characteristics just what you may have.

Pics always are best. Post some of your rifle's noticeable identifiers in a NEW thread.

If they cant, not many folks can.

Start a new thread with a detailed description of the configuration of your gun and serial #. Pictures are best.

Thanks all. Will have to go back and check it out. With the SN being so high, you figure it was factory Drilled & Tapped? I didn't look to see if the logo was on top but it must not have been or I think I would have noticed it was drilled through.

Anything above 750 thousand should be factory drilled.

I'm glad there's all of you experts on 40's-60's Savages hereabouts. I don't pay much attention to that 'modern' stuff. I still say the EG and R will never catch on.
