For the 458? Midway stocks the brass and all components, and it looks to be a bit more flexible than the 50 Beo, and you avoid any potentioal upcoming bans with the 458. is advertised as being very near 45-70

Typically when they ban something it's only future sales. Currently owned items are almost always grandfathered in as legal, aka the assault rifle ban for those deadly bayonet lugs, powerful muzzle breaks, and violently collapsible stocks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. And after they do your property just increased in value 2X. That might be something to consider also.

I've got a Beowulf too. But would also like to have a 458.

Yes, I do know that, and it is something to consider, but as I also own a 45-70 and a 45-90, & a 1911, I'ze gots some 45 components about, and the thought a semi-auto 45-70 is pretty cool!

I have one for close range deer and bear hunting, it hammers them hard. Loaded ammo is available from Cor_bon and brass is readily available, lee and RCBS make dies.

Current Shooting Times has an artcle by David Fortier. 400 grains at 1600 fps does make it a 45-70 equivalent. Parent brass is .50AE, but it's pulled from the forming machinery before the trimming steps, so it is longer than normal. Oddly, but happily, Fortier says they feed just fine from UNmodified Ar15 mags.

I'd almost agree that there is more versatility to the 458. I'm very happy with the 50 at this time. Brass is easy, easy to load. I get 275 Xs at 2200 almost IIRC in a 16 inch tube. No recoil to speak of. IE it thumps but not fast and hard, very manageable. And the 50 also works out of unmodified mags.

If I can manage a 458 barrel only and put my own upper together I'll probably have one of those at some point also. Last thing I'd worry about is a ban or ammo availability.

I'm also looking forward to some 473 bolt face stuff too. There are more folks out there with 473 bolts than i was led to believe. Opens the world to many other things.

yeah, and I been hearing about someone building an AR-15 lower that accepts AR-10 mags or some other 308 length mag. Now the possibilities are endless [Linked Image]

Ridge runner - nice pic! I know that there is a company called Cobb Manufacturing that makes a lower wherein the mag well is interchangeable, so you can go from a 223 to 308 to a 30-06 length mag well. I think that the '06 mag well uses BAR mags

I have a 458 SOCOM

I use 300g HP, 405 SP, and 600g solids

It is literally a blast
Brass is made by starline and readily available. Cost between the 458 and 50 are pretty equal, though the biggest difference will be 50 beo ammo available from Wolf later this year. At this time commercial ammo for the SOCOM is only available from Corbon and is expensive.

The biggest advantage to the SOCOM is the number of bullet options available for it. Any bullet that works in the 45-70 will work in the SOCOM.

There is a ton of info in the AR Variants section on ar15.com

www.teppojustu.com is the maker of the 458 SOCOM

I have no doubt the bullet selection for the 458 is a good one, but with the Speer Gold Dots, Hornady XTP's and the three Barnes choices (among many others) there is no shortage of good bullets for the 50, either. I guess that's good for both!

I spent a little time dong a little T&E with a Teppo Jutsu (sp?) upper. It was set up with a 16" barrel, free floated aluminum handguard, and a flat top upper. I took the thing to the range and attached it to a Colt M-16A1 lower. Loaded up a 30 round magazine and went to town. I would have to check my notes to see how many rounds the magazines would hold, but I can tell you that the rounds fed flawlessly regardless of using the 20 rounders or 30 round mags.

Accuracy was more than acceptable at 50 yards (all the room I had to shoot at that particular range.)

After all was said and done, I told a friend of mine that if I hunted hogs in the swamp with dogs, I would own one for sure. An aimpoint or EOTech sitting atop a 16" carbine upper would make a piggie smasher.

One thing I remember being told by the folks at Teppo Jutsu, they asked that you did not use a collapsible stock, as it might close during recoil. The recoil, by the way, was definitely less than that generated by a beowulf I piddled with. I only used the 300 grain HP load from CorBon.

I like the Socom. Wouldn't care to own one from Rock River.

Sorry about that, had to re-read my own post. What I meant to type was that I would not mind owning a RRA chambered for the socom.

In other words, I would not hesitate to make room for it in the safe.

Rock River Arms puts out top shelf products.
Period.

is the 458 socom a one step neck sizing with a 50 AE case, or is there trimming involved?
