After a five million-plus year plunge from the distant Ort cloud, the two-mile wide snowball is even as we speak zipping around the far side of the sun at 845,000 miles per hour, just a million miles out. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/...-truth-for-the-comet-of-the-century.htmlIF it doesn't all evaporate it could be spectacular next month, early morning at first and then all night long by Christmas. Hmmm, IF its still there, down to a mere 800,000 miles an hour now on the flip side..... http://www.cometison2013.co.uk/perihelion-and-distance/Interesting thing being, whatevers left ain't gonna stop, from what I understand its gonna be tossed from the solar system permanent. Birdwatcher

I'm still of the opinion it will break up. It's thermal peak won't hit until sometime after perihelion. With luck, we'll see the kaboom. It could be even more spectacular after that, too.

That was a cool video. I don't know anything about these types of things. Is it a big deal that it didn't make it?

Ison may be dead.
STOCKHOLM Scientists say it appears a comet from the fringes of the solar system didn't survive its close encounter with the sizzling sun.
Images from NASA spacecraft showed Comet ISON approaching for its slingshot around the sun on Thursday, but nothing coming out on the other side.
In a Google+ hangout, U.S. Navy solar researcher Karl Battams said "ISON probably hasn't survived this journey."
Phil Plait, an astronomer who runs the "Bad Astronomy" blog, agreed, saying "I don't think the comet made it."
Still, he said, it wouldn't be all bad news if the 4.5-billion-year-old rock broke up into pieces, because astronomers might be able to study the pieces and learn more about comets.http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013...broke-up-scientists-say/?intcmp=features

Dang, I had high hopes for ISON.

In its last hours, the comet was being heated to almost 5000 by the sun - and that's a bit hard on something made largely of carbon dioxide ice and water ice. It was losing mass at a rate of some 3,000,000 tons a second in that heat. It had already gone from three miles in diameter down to about half that. Internal pressures must have been huge at the end and it just burst into fragments. It's now just a diffuse cloud of gravel and gas.

845000 mph? That's probably fast enough to escape our galaxy! (our solar system orbits at roughly 500,000 mph relative to the galactic core)
