I'm in the market for a reasonably-priced sight for my .22 pistol. I'll use it for plinking, squirrels, and grouse.
I know next to nothing about the available options, any recommendations?

I had a TASCO Red dot on my 5 1/2 bull barrel Buckmark. Worked great. Very accurate. Just point and shoot! Sold the gun 2 weeks ago to a guy who wanted it for his daughter.

I bought a cheap red dot and it had a huge halo around the dot effectively obscuring small targets.
Look out for that in your quest.

I'll second the UltraDot line of red dot sights. If you don't need the added features of the Match Dot, you can pick up the standard 25mm version for a few bucks less. http://www.natchezss.com/Optics.cfm...rodID=UZULDT0000B&prodTitle=UltraDot 25 Sight 1 I've personally not had much luck with anything of lesser quality (and price) and for the $$$ the UltraDot is very hard to beat.

Only red dot sight I've used is a Burris Fastfire II on a Ruger MkIII and it is a great plinking and hunting sight. It's not what I'd recommend for really precise work on small targets out past wherever that 4 MOA dot obscures said target but as long as your target is appropriately sized you can make good hits out to 100 yards easy enough. It's very fast to use and does not rely on precisely mounting the pistol to eye level. If you can see the dot anywhere in the little window that's where the bullet is going. It's also very light and compact.
The new Fastfire III can be had with a 3 MOA dot and I understand it has improved features for sight adjustment and replacing the battery without removing the sight, which were the only faults I had with the II model.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

The Ultra-Dot is a fantastic sight for the range, but for field use I prefer the Burris Fastfire.

I haven't used any of the above recommended products, but I do have a BuckMark with a TRUGLO Reflex sight on it that I like immensely. Easy to use and lots of brightness and reticule choices.

I had Tasco Optima 2000 reddots on a couple of revolvers and they were great except that they were too fragile. The best part was that they were small, about the size of my thumb, and fit in holsters easily.
The Optima 2000 isn't available, but Burris, Leupold, Trujican and a few others make similar reddots. The Burris fastfire is about $200 while the others are about $500. I would probable get one of the more expensive ones if I were you.
