You are probably thinking of the ejector spring. If you cut down the extractor spring it will make little difference on how it throws brass, it will just start leaving it in the chamber.
Cutting a coil off of the ejector sping is a fairly common practice to help control ejection.

Dtech,
Yes sorry about that I ment the ejector spring.
I bought a brass deflector and it seems to work pretty good, but it's bulky and odd when put on the rifle.

A combination of bolt velocity and ejector spring tension is what dictates where and how your brass is ejected. When I shoot my prairie dog loads, my brass is thrown forward. That indicates high bolt velocity. When I shoot my target loads, the brass is ejected into a neat little pile beside and slightly behind me. An ajustable gas block will also help control ejection paterns if it bothers you.

Most match shooters I know of trim theirs also. You can pick up brass behind the firing line while shooting but not in front of.

I read about trimming the spring at Missouri High power.
Interesting - I just bought a $20 deflector to not toss hot brass on my fellow shooters.

Trim the ejector to behave. Then if the deflector(the built in one) dents your case necks put a sticky back piece of velcro on it or cover it with some black silicone and your necks will be fine too.
