I saw this rifle at a gunshow in OKC a few months ago and briefly spoke with the gentleman selling it. If I remember correctly he said that Art was a friend of his and had built it for him in the fifties or sixties.

That is cool Formidilosis! I would have gave it a good thinkin'.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Not Bob here but am old enough to remember the Mashburn Cartridges which were just another line of "improved" cases. Had a 375 Mashburn which gained about 125-150 fps over the H&H in the same barrel. The "270" would not be a significant improvement over the standard either. It's charm would be in that, you'd be the only guy with one.

I don't know how the price would hold up against a pre-64 70 that is to some degree a collector's item if it was truly Mr. Mashburns.

Do Remember the BalVar but not that funky base. grin

Mashburn's Gun Store back in the '80's when I was repping was in OKC at 1218 N Pennsylvania. Mr Mashburn was already gone, but the store was run by pair of old gentlemen named Arnold Beck & Hayden Bryce who had been there since the early 50's.

Trying to sell those folks new guns & stuff was an education in gun lore and history. The place was like a museum but they still did some everyday mostly repair bidnizz.

Formid: Thanks for posting that! Cool old rifle! Looks like a FW M70 270 that was rechambered but not sure if that cartridge was a wildcat of the belted brass or an improved 30/06 case. The 7mm Mashburn Super is the only Mashburn case I know a bit about.

I will see what I can find info on the 270 wildcat. Thanks again!

The mount is an older Bausch and Lomb, adjustable as the B&L scopes of that era, often considered THE finest, were not internally adjustable. They came in many variations and I have two complete ones, for an FN action, which was on a Dumoulin rifle I had and also from one of three original P-64-.375s, I had.

They attached on the left side of the receiver bridge into the twin holes for a receiver sight and some, I understand, had available "peep" sights to use should your scope go TU. I have never seen one of these, that I can recall, but, have seen/handles the similar mounts by Stith back when I was young.

That is a NICE .270 fwt, these are among my 2-4 alltime favourite rifles so chambered. I also have never seen a .270 Mashburn, but, imagine it must have been much like a .270 Bee, given the receiver dimensions.

Would be kinda neat to fire that old piece up and go hunting with it, eh!

Kutenay it sure would....be more fun to play with than the boring pass time of stuffing 308 hulls and other things like that.

I loaded some 270 Winchesters yesterday with 130 Swift SS II's....if it weren't for the radio I'd have fallen asleep. grin

I believe several of you are correct and I misspoke above concerning the "270 M". I could not find data for it with just a quick surf but I believe it is a "magnum" volume case. As one poster mentioned might be very similar to the 270 B.

My comment about the 375 Mashburn not gaining too much more velocity was relative to the parent H&H case, already a "magnum".

George he 375 Mashburn must have been like the 375 Weatherby....and 375 AI,375 JRS....all formed from full length, blown out versions of the 375H&H.Similar.

Have no idea what the 270 Mashburn was... frown

I remember that store. I went in it many times when I was a younger man. Everything in it was older than I was...! Mashburn was a prominent gunsmith at one time...and he had those Mashburn Magnum cartridges.

I used to visit there a lot. I recall taking my niece there in the late '80's to buy her husband a Christmas present (Rem 700) - she later said something about wall-to-wall testosterone.
