The wife is starting to look at a new SUV. She tows a quad trailer around with a side by side on it when we camp. Any opinions on brands that you have been happy with? We can leave GM out of the mix, thats not going to happen.

In 160,000 miles, I haven't had any complaints about my 2007 Durango. Sure like that rig.

I just picked up a '14 Grand Cherokee. Too new to comment on reliability, but it sure is a nice ride. My treestand and a box with clothing fits nicely in the back.

I have an Excursion that's in great condition for its age, so I haven't the need for a new one. If I were in the market, I'd get the long Expedition with the tow package. It's a very nice ride.

My wife bought a '11 Explorer this Spring, under 10k miles on it so no longevity report yet.

Drives nice, fast down the highway. Funky AWD, goes forward and steers easy but I don't like how it brakes on ice/snow packed streets, mushy jerk feel to the pedal in the 'Winter/gay snowflake' control position.

Might be good for someone who panics and slams the pedal, annoying otherwise.

I think all the newer vehicles are equipped with that stupid traction control now. I know a couple people who have newer F350's and one guy that uses a new Chevy.

They all hate the 4x4 bullchit control modes.

The Explorer is just a large 4x4 car.

Expeditions and Excursions are friggin' tanks!

Sam, on my expedition I can shut that traction control nonsense off.

It's the schnizzle for actual winter driving. Hit the brake when you need to and forget the rest.

Most of the TC kicks off when in 4WD (at least low range) anyway.

I dig the new Grand Cherokee diesel.

I have a ford explorer now and I like it a lot more than I thought I would. If I had the money though and wanted another SUV, I'd drop the coin on a Toyota 4-Runner.

I'll never buy another Toyota I'll have to work on. They're fine up until then but they suck ass to work on!

We've had stuff, 18 vehichles in 21 years. If I were they one buying for the wife it would be a Grand Cherokee. We like the one we had before and it was as reliable as anything the japs make. It was replaced when our son took it to school. She's driving a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon now and really likes it but it's not as foofy as she likes. I'm getting it as my dd, and will probably be putting her in an Overland model.

I did drop the coin for a 4runner.. The best purchase on a vehicle I ever made. I have had it for almost two years and I'm super happy with it but, I have not towed with it. The book says it will tow 5k and I imagine that it will but I have not tried it

Most cars and trucks today suck to work on unless you can put them on a lift.

The problem with the 4 runner is as with all models they keep making them heavier and heavier. The new runners look like they are trying to morph it into an FJ cruiser.

We have a 2011 Explorer and like it quite well. Decent mileage (about 24 on the highway) and surprising good in snow and other slippery conditions.

I'm in the same boat. Wife is ready for a new car to replace our Tahoe. GM is out. Looking at Explorer (bad reviews) Hylander, XC60 and JGC. Not sure how this will shake out. Would like to get her one for Christmas.

Dennis, what bad reviews did you see for the Explorer?

I hate the touch screen but my wife likes it.

Drivers side rear view sucks for changing lanes. Mirrors are fine but I always look over my shoulder just in case of a blind spot. Tough to see back through the side windows, that is my main gripe.

Very limited use so far but no problems. I got a 5yr/75k extended warranty thrown in when we bought it. $100 deductible, not gonna get screwed when that electronic chit starts breaking down....grin
