Ordering a McMillan stock for my 280 AI I'm building. I am planning on using a #4 Brux on a Rem 700 LA, what length should I put for the Barrel Shank Length?

What does your gunsmith say? I have a 280 AI is 1" in front of recoil lug. A 6.5x47 from GAP that is 1.75 inches in fron of lug. A Gradous 7 wsm with just over 2" in front of lug. Are you trying to make a certain weight?

Make sure and add your recoil lug thickness in to your shank length, McMillan uses the length from the front of the action not from the recoil lug for shank length.

1.5 inches for the perfect balance and set back if needed down the road.

Ask your smith what it will finish at.
Or tell him where you want it, and relay that to McMillan.

I agree 100%. I hate the way a looong shank looks. I sure can't see how leaving more of the heavy end on it helps balance. I have one rifle with 1.5" and wish I'd have know better when spec'd it. Next tube will be half that.

I prefer that size as well. But I am not sure the OP understands that size needs to be affirmed with the Smith before McMillan.
Simply telling McMillan what size he wants the barrel shank would be putting the carriage well in front of the horse.

I try to always get all of the parts together, the stock inlet how I want (including shank), matching barrel blank, ect.., and take the whole pile of parts to the smith. this way the smith has the stock right in front of him when he fits the barrel to the action.

I always order a stock with a little shorter shank than the intended finished product, and open to suit.
I have some on order now inletted for a RMR inlet, but they're for 2's or 3's.....

You're right Travis.
I've not ordered a smaller barrel channel yet but have shank length. Makes sense because opening it up a tad is so simple. Good idea.
