I saw a model 54 hornet at cabelas in Leiha UT last week. it was out on the sale rack. I think the price was 750 or so cant remember for sure..

Yes condition? I'm guessing that at that price it's been around the block a time or two. If it looks remotely factory $750 is steel.

I looked at that gun yesterday, it was drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver for a scope side mount, also drilled and tapped on rear bridge with scope mounted on it. But the bolt looked unmolested and it had the transitional safety. I wish I didn't see that gun, can't stop thinking about it.

Can you educate me on what a "transitional safety" is? The model 54 is quite intriguing, just don't know much about them. I've seen some for cheap at gunshows, but that's about the extent of it...

Winchester 54's have a safety that is a copy of the 98 Mauser, a transitional safety has the wing lever that looks kinda like a traditional win. model 70 lever but not. I think transitional safety's you push forward to put on safe, and the current model 70 safety's you pull back to put on safe. I hope I got that right.

condition was not perfect but but not hammered either.
if I had not been flying home I would have bought it.
