My buddy and I are looking to get our elk hides tanned hair off or buckskin style. Does anyone have a suggestion on who to use? ]sounds like there are not to many options out there. They do not have to be braintanned, but that's ok too.
Thanks
Razz

Check out this company. A friend had a deer hide done with the hair on and it turned out nice.

I had a cow elk hide done for my youngest boy a few years back and the local taxadermist had a connection with someone in Idaho who tans hides, so you may want to ask your local taxidermist also where to get the tanning done at.

Grab your copy of the February 1956 Outdoor Life. The guy who wrote the camping section gave details on several methods. wink

I've done deerskins and they turn out beautifully. All I did is get an book by author Matt Richards titled "Deer Skins To Buckskins". Just follow that little book and you'll have an better product than if you send it out.

There's also an ton of stuff written about it by the Paleo Institute by Jim Riggs and Watts.

Thanks all, we went with RMT I've done brain tan on deer myself before, did my first when I was 14. I just don't have the time given my work and travel schedule.

RMT is not a tannery, they are a middleman and you will pay twice as much. You could have saved a lot of money if you would have sent your hides directly to a tannery. You can send it to the same tannery that they do. There are not a lot of tanners that do hair off tanning anymore. You also have to be careful because a couple of the ones that still do will cut your hide in half to fit it through their shaving machine, and not tell you. You find out after you get your hide back.
