I am looking to buy a shooter grade 99 and have been looking at a few.
Yesterday I saw one and it looked like one I might be interested in until I looked closer. It was a early 1900's 30-30 with a straight grip crescent butt. No perch belly, but no cracks in either the stock or forearm.
The receiver looks like it was stippled with a border? It had hash marks across the front of the receiver. I have never seen one like it but have never been bit by the Savage bug before.
The things that put up a warning light were the rifle has been re-barreled and has no stampings on it and the receiver looks almost like a Brownells oxoblue finish.Vintage Lyman peep and replacement ivory bead front.
Also they are asking 500. and I see working 99's in 300 Savage for 400-500 listed that appear all original. I like the idea of the 30-30 because ammo is easy to come by and it will do all I need.
Any input is appreciated.
Merry Christmas

Don't know what to say about the one you saw, definitely a shooter if it has an aftermarket barrel on it. If the stippling is factory (very unlikely), it'd be an interesting shooter. Peep is probably worth $100 if in good shape.

And yes, you can find later 99's in good condition for that price. Depends on what you're looking for.

Avoid guns that are poorly done bubba jobs. Well executed work is different.

I wouldn't buy junk because you like the caliber. 300 Savage ammo isn't difficult to find.

Let it go.
