Does anyone have some of these bullets handy. I need the length of this bullet to plug into the greenhill formula to determine if this bullet will stabilize well ,beyond 200yds. The length of any 180 gr. .308 bullet, of various manufacturers would be highly appreciated. So far the Nos. 165gr.Bal. tip measures at 1.302" and according to the formula will be great in a 1 turn in 10" twist(standard 30-06) Sierra 165gr.spitz.at 1.181" calculates for a 1 in12" twist but is close enough to try to work up a load for. Most of these bullets will give 1"and 2" groups at 100 and 200yds out of a hunting rifle, but since I have the time and interest I would like to see what a bolt action hunting rifle will do at beyond 200yds with good bullets and proper load. 3" groups at 300yds. too much to hope for? Greenhill Formula can be found at www.2-hat.com/twistrate.htm I know that $1000. and up custom or high grade manufactured rifles can do this but I am talking about the average Rem. or Ruger, Winchester off the shelf rifles. If you gents will measure your .308bullets and post the lengths, I will be happy to post the results of what twist works best with what length bullet. I am not saying that this is the answer to all our accuracy questions but it would be interesting to me to have some additional info. Thanks. Shoot safe.

Dave, have you ever launched those 180's at 30/06 velocities? My Husqvarna has a Hart barrel with a 1-12 twist. It shoots 165 gr. BT's great and 180's good. Does th velocity have an impact?

to dave7mm: small state-pa. is. bought an ithaca over/under from a gun shop in albion in 67. near rairoad tracks on a side street. I mean the only street. had a hunting camp(farm house) leased from lady real estate agent. she had a son with red hair who grew up to be a teacher, got married and wanted his grandpaps house back so we vacated. was at the corner of inlet road and the road that leads to conneautville. hunted deer, rabbits and groundhogs for yrs in the area. knew junior effort, bud weible and john halko and his parents: he lived on rt 98 just north of crossingville. nice group for the 300. always liked that caliber. army uses it for 1000 yd matches. hunted around cam.springs, atlantic and harmonsburg(on agnew farm) I am 2.5hrs south of you on 79. used to fish on the peninsula on the beach side before lifeguards showed up, off the stone jetties around beach 7/8. whenever i am having a bad day i think about the long alfalfa fields and the great groundhog shooting around your part of the state. any place i can sit in the shade and glass for chucks left around there? bought boots etc. at wolfes in meadville. nothing beats listening to a couple beagles while holding my 20 gauge or sitting in a field waiting for a crawford county chuck to pop up. what memories. yrs ago i walked up on 6 chucks with a borrowed 22 hornet. you are fortunate to live in the heart of great country. i used to know my way around 98 and 18, haven't been up there for yrs. post more groups!

RD,
Usually if a bullet wont stablize you know right away. You get funny shaped holes in the target. If your luckey enough to hit it.One time I tried shooting 55X bullets out of my 22 CHeetah.
It has a 1-16 twist.Never hit the paper at 100 Yards.I monkeyed around with it quite a bit and found that it would shoot about a 2 inch group at 50 yards, every single bullet hole in the paper was a perfict bullet profile. Not a round hole.
I always thought it would be great fun to go hunting with it.Just think of what the tumbleing bullet would do to woodchuck. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.
Pushing up your FPS can help bullets that are on the edge. But when the wheels come off you will end up with a shorter lighter bullet.

Yep er.There are still great places to play wack a mole up here.I have stomped pretty much all over that area.My favorite is Hayfield township south of Crossingville.Theres one field down there I shot over 100 chucks out of.In one summer.
I find that you have to go farther and farther south. Some dingbat drills some farmers house and then you have,
Unfriendly Farmer.Understandable, but not good.I like friendly farmers.A few years ago I stopped at this guys house and asked permission to hunt a field across from the farm house.
He told me to go out right behind his house.I told him That I didnt like shooting that close to his house. His said I want the ones in the back yard cleaned out first.I shot 7 chucks in 15 minutes right behind his house.Seven shots Seven dead chucks. After that ,he was my bud.I cleaned out the back yard. I cleaned out the field across from his house. He told me about 4 or 5 other fields.Gave me some other farmers names. And locations.I like friendly farmers.
Ever do any dove hunting up here? Now thats fun.I cant hit [bleep] with shotgun but when those things get to flyen. Its a blast.

Most of my 06 reloading was with the 165BT.That was quite a number of years ago.For an 06 the place to start is IMR 4350.
IMR 4350 and the 30-06 are like Ken and Barbie. They just go togeather.

A 1 in 10 twist in a 30-06 will stabilize a 200 AccuBond you will not have a problem with the 180 BT's

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Thanks much Dave and jwp475. I have great luck with 58grs. of IMR-4350 with the 165 tips. I guess I have to mess around some more with the 180's. I thought maybe the 180's were too long for the 1-12 twist.
