Guys Ohio is looking like it is going to allow straight walled rifle cartridges for deer season. I have been thinking of building a 450 marlin bolt action. I know people are going to say to go with a 458 and load down, but I would rather have a 450 and load normal. I was wondering if anyone had built one (maybe even have one for sale). I was reading that 350 Remington or wsm action should just require a rebarrel, a savage would be easiest for a barrel swap but I see wsm winchesters pretty reasonable. A Mauser could probably be made to work as well. Any advice, opinions, or first hand experience is appreciated.

A short length Savage in a Mag (WSM) would be the easiest way to do it. Only need to change the barrel and possibly open the barrel channel depending on the difference between barrel dia.
Might want to post this question on a Savage forum. I am sure someone some where some time has done this.
A short action with 18 to 20 inch barrel would make a very handy rifle and in 450M would deal with what ever comes along.
..pick..

I would be looking for a Sharps in 45/110! But a Siamese MAuser in 45/70 or 45/90 would be really cool, too and give the benefit of a repeating rifle. With some 300-350gr .458 Spitzers, a 45/90 or 45/110 can probably reach out there a bit more than the game commision was intending, but would be quite an effective and legal tool.

Where did you get your info on Ohio allowing straight walled rifle's? I've been waiting for them to do that for years, but all I've heard is just rumor.

They haven't allowed them yet but it looks pretty good for their annual meeting this march. Hopefully they do get it passed. I will still wait until after march before I begin building.

Cool, I really hope they do. I hate slug guns lol. If they do, I see a Marlin 45-70 in my future. Or maybe a Sharps...

Had a new CZ Model 3 300WSM that I had rebarreled to 450 Marlin, was fun, accurate and pleasant to shoot. Was sub MOA at 100yds. Still have a new box of 450 Marlin brass sitting around, rifle went down the road during the divorce:(

Was all that was required from the cz a barrel swap. Did it feed and function as a repeater.

How hard would this be to do to a Rem 700 7mm RM? Bolt face should be the same, would there be any feeding issues?

I don't personally own one, but one of my good customers had one built by Hill Country Rifles on a model 70 WSM. He called them when he got the itch and they suggested a 70 WSM as one of the best candidates for the conversion, so he bought a new stainless 70 .270 WSM from us and sent it off. I had the pleasure of shooting it when he got it back and now I want one badly myself. One day...

I have a barrel on order to build a .458x2" on Rem 700 WSM action. Barrel should be here soon.

Certainly can be done, I've made several. I'd recommend a Controlled round push feed model 70. Feeds better than anything else I've tried. Other actions can be made to work, but this requires the least if any work. I'd also caution against making it a super light weight rifle: a 450 Marlin loaded to 60000 psi is nipping the heals of a 458 Win mag. Charlie
