I have had a couple of digitals now and wonder if it all was worth it? I have spent a lot of time learning software to print and just learning a new camera system! There are times when I am tempted to break out one of the old compact 35's, buy some ISO100 and 200 film and be done with it!!!
Is there anyone else out there that agrees with me or is everyone committed to the digital?

I still use my Pentax k1000. Though cost wise the digital fares better as you can delete what you don't like and don't have to develop a whole roll only to discover you don't like any of them.I took both digital and old one to AK with me.

I currently have something like 4000 photos on my hard drive. Most will never be printed and many are duplicates that I haven't taken time to dump yet. Some are duplicates but in different sizes and resolutions. Some have printed mattes of colors taken from the photo so they match. Some are just garbage.
I never take just one shot of anything. I usually take several using different settings. But, do you know how much these would cost if I was using film?

I replaced my K1000 with a digital Rebel. I love it. The learning curve is steep, but I am doing things with it I never did with my 35mm. I didn't get rid of the old Pentax, but I doubt I'll use it much in the future.

I...have seen some beautiful work done using digital cameras.
However, in a way it seems to represent the dumbing down of photography, though that could be just a personal bias as I always loved working with 35mm.

I still have my Pentax Spotmatic and lenses, plus my Contax RX and Leica point and shoot. Film still works.
I use a digital camera too, just now a Sony DSC V1. Before it was Nikons.
I expect to keep using both. For example I use the Pentax when it is too cold for the electronics to function. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

jim A chemical handwarmer in the camera case keeps the cameras warm enough to shoot for quite a while, even in pretty extreme cold.
I've been told the problem is when the camera is turned on when everything is very cold. Electrical surge can toast the sensor. Do not know how true that is, but I keep shooting a warm digital camera in the cold without problem... art

Dumbing Down? You need just as much understanding to use a digital and get great shots as you need for 35mm. And, you have to be computer literate too.
Digital has it all over film.
Ignorance is not confined to uneducated people.

There is something nice about the old 35mm. I picked up a digital just for point and shoot type work, but if I want to get creative I use either my old Ricoh XR-1 or Minolta XtSi. I like the XtSi for when I want fast shots since my digital takes too long sometimes. Also the lens changing on the SLR's is nice. If I had that on a digital I would probably use it a lot more, but for me the convenience of digital is the small size. I can fit my digital camera and my MiniDV video camera into a Pelican 21 waterproof case. Perfect for in the boat (and in my case on the quad for those of you who remember my camera dunking episode last fall).

Don't forget that digital SLR's don't have the delay that point and shoot digital cameras have. However, with your point and shoot digital you can take a short movie, and this is not possible with a digital SLR.
But with a digital SLR (like the Canon Rebel XT and others), you can set it just like a manual camera if you want. In fact, I can set mine to take black and white pictures, and the software to capture the subject through a software filter if that's what I want.

A digital can be set to take just ONE black & white. You don't have to use a whole roll for that one shot.

WOW! I hope not> I'm trying to talk myself into selling the pair of Cannon AE-1 s I have with the extra lenses and power winder to get the dough to get a SLR dig. I just seem to have a hard time parting with them. but film stinks..--Jim--

If you happen to be one of the few (as I) that like to use a wide angle lens, it can get very expensive to go below the 28mm equivalent in digital.
I find myself taking way too many exposures to get the shot that I could get in one or two with film. That being said, they are very handy.

However, most digital cameras can be ordered with a kit lens. For example, the 18-55mm kit lens on my rebel XT can be found new for around $60.00 to $90.00. Now, if I buy a Canon "L" wide lens, it would probably cost me several hundred dollars, but that's where Sigma and Tamron come into the picture. You can get a top of the line wide angle 10mm, 200mm, etc. for around $400.00. Or a 12-35mm zoom for about the same price. Take a look: http://www.sigma4less.com/sess/utn1543e1...=all&mnt=CA

This one was taken with the kit lens set to 18 mm. No sharpening was done to the picture.
